280ZX low end power loss
Hey guys...
Lately the power on the Z has died down in the low end. We've had the car probably 6 months now and in that time, I've done the following...
all new injectors, fuel lines, and filter
new cap and rotor
new plugs
oil changes (2)
cold air intake
new plug wires --> have not installed yet, just bought them last night and will install tomorrow to see if that helps
But, lately the power down low has definitely died down some... The car seemed to have a smoother power curve, but now the car seems to lag until 2500 RPMs and then all of a sudden it gets its butt moving... Sooo, I'm kind of stumped, seeing as how I've done most of the normal tune up stuff...
Anything else I should look at? I'm know my way around cars well, just wasn't sure if there was some Z specific thing to check...
Please help!!

Distributor
Maybe your distributor has shifted a little. Loosen that little screw by the base and turn the distributor clockwise just a tad. Or possibly your vaccume advance is getting sticky as most distributors on these Z's tend to do. I gained a lot of low and midrange power by swaping out my distributor for one with a properly functioning vaccume advance.
If your power loss is over a long period of time, it could just be the timing chain stretch but you haven't had your Z that long.

ok replaced the plug wires and that seems to have helped a little, but still have some low end lag...
I read over the timing and idle adjustment process in the old *** Chilton's I have and it sounds fairly complicated.. Damn I need to get a Haynes manual... lol...
Anyway, I'm going to try these two things and see if i can work at it...
Any other suggestions...?

Maybe when you put your cold air intake on, you got an air leak somewhere on one of those boots. If you have an air leak after the Air Flow Meter it will show up as a lean mixture untill you've gained enough rpms so that the small leak doesnt' make that much of a difference.

It sounds lika there´s something with the AFM, try cleaning it. Does it run like normal on idle? I don´t think its the timing chain because it usually mean top-end power loss.
