280ZX radio

I can't believe it. The AM works great but all of a sudden the FM only works sometimes. It doesn't matter what station you try to select on FM it just dosen't work consistantly. Any thoughts?

Something loose? Check the antenna. Sounds like it's rubbed against something, or it's coming loose.
Stock stereo?

You're gonna have to do some investigating man. If it's something that happens once in a while, and it is not constant, I am guessing that there is a loose conenction. AM band uses a coil inside the radio most of the time. FM uses the external antena. So, my guess is the there is something loose between the radio, and the antena. Only way to find it is going to be to do some work.
I don't know of any common weird problems with the factory radio that makes the FM band go out alone.

Upgrades are always a consideration. Or are you trying to keep everything factory? Installing a new system is not hard to do. I could not stand stock radios even in new vehicles. But, that's just me.

Thank you. Want to keep it stock as much as possible. I'll check the wire connection.

2by2, Ya, I want to stay stock as much as possible. You did a good job though. I've seen to many "upgrades" that have a tacky looking replacement for the silver panel. Good job

Kinda cool.

My thing is this. With a mint condition numbers matching Z, it's just not going to be a big investment. But, if you want it like that for the style, or for taste, then more power to you. This is probably the only car made in the 70's or earlier that I wouldn't feel bad for molesting it. haha
If it was a numbers matching 1971 Plymouth Superbird, I would not. haha

I have a stock 79 it did the exact same thing. Then eventually the FM went completely and now the AM too. I think it is internal ic issue.

This situation is bazzar. I have not been able to figure out the problem with the radio. as mentioned above, FM is intermittent, AM works all the time.

Now that it is cold outside, i'm sure you can imagine the heater could come in handy, but it works intermittently. The bazzar part is that when the FM does not work neither does the heater and when the he FM is working so does the heater and visa vera. WTF, WTF again

Does anyone have a clue regarding this issue and what to do to fix it?

When you say "the heater isn't working" do you mean the blower, or that there is no heat coming out when the air is blowing out of the vents?
