Not to interrupt this thread but I was wondering if it is true that the voice warning system on 82 280zx actually sounds through the stock radio. And if that is true (my car was being parted out when I saved it so It never had a radio and bunch of other stuff) Has anyone been able to still keep the voice warning system intact and have a aftermarket stereo work and if so how did you wire it to make it work? By the way not only was my Z being parted out but it must of been owned formerly by a slasher film director because they sliced and diced so much of the wiring that Its a miracle that the car even runs. Thanks in advance for any input on this (and yes the voice warning module is still in the car on rear passenger quarter panel) .

voice system
the radio and the voice warning are two different systems. you DO NOT need the factork radio for this to work. the recorder for the voice warning is located at the rear passengers side hatch aera in the spare tire and the shock tower aera. It could be missing being that the car was parted out before. try leaving your keys out and turning your lights on and see if you hear a clicking sound repeatedly inside the car. if you do, unit is more than likley still there and you may have to peel the dash out and replace the center speaker. if you do not hear the clicking, unit probley gone or broken.

Can you instead of pulling the dash, just pull the wires to that speaker and wire them to the speaker above the glove box? That would be easier to do if it would work. Or maybe, LOL wire it to all speakers so that you have surround talking lady. That would be more realistic, a woman fussing from all 4 corners of the car.

I have problems with my FM dropping from stereo to mono and no AM. I opened the radio and cleaned out the dust and dirt and had a little improvement. I then tested the radio using a CD player that broadcasts a signal on a specific FM freq and still had the stereo/mono problem. I'm ready to get a new radio that would fit the car.

Good luck. I alway thought that the stock looks better the any other.
I found that when the temp is above 60 outside, my FM works fine. I is only when it is colder than 60 that it does not. Strange I know. I'm staying with stock until it's dead.

Strange Radio
You have a very strange situation here. Allow me to point out a couple of things. Your AM and FM radio are built into the same case but they are two totally differrent radios sharing a common amp. The only thing common bewteen the radio and the heater is the 12v DC supply. When the FM goes out do you still hear the amp, when you turn it up do you hear a hiss? It could be that the fan system is having difficulity and is throwing out some RF garbage that is messing with the FM. That is especially possiable since there is a direct connection between the fan not working and the FM not working.
The fact that 60 degrees somehow is the make/break point for this radio I would suspect a defective IC in the radio circuit. Like I said the two radios are separate so I believe that's more than likely your problem. If you think about it you have two totally different situations that can make this thing stop working so my vote says it's at the circuit level in the FM. I am like you I would keep it stock all the way by finding a replacement radio or having this one repaired.
