81 5spd trans broken piece off near shifter?
Hey everyone. Was wondering about a 5spd trans i looked at over at a local junkyard. It has only 103000miles on it and then the car was crashed. A piece off the top near shifter about the size of a quarter broke off.. its priced at 150 bucks.. but it cant shift and needs repair due to the chunk missing that is covering what i believe is called the rear extention oil seal. Its the area that i think a bolt passes through and holds the rear extention rod, or whatever it is that makes the car shift.
When i saw the trans i thought it was not worthy of being used,, but then when i got home i got thinking is it repairable?.. wish i took pictures of it.. sorry. :/

Pics would sure help. If you're talking about a hole in the housing, would it take another housing to fix it? How would a hole like that be caused? I'm thinking the car was in gear when it was crashed so you may have more damage than you think in there. But if you buy it and have to take it to a tranny rebuilder, what do you save?
Lots of 5-spd transm around that will fit your Z, used, rebuilt, etc., maybe even new too. This one may not be worth your time - unless it comes with a warranty...

yeah good points.. i was thinking about the same things as far as more damage than i can see.. but im in maine and datsun parts are scarce unless you buy them online or something and have them shipped.. but when it comes to used stuff i really like seeing in person what im getting most times.
The car was super smashed on the passenger side right behind the front wheel but before the door.. strut area was pancaked against the engine block. Hit hard cuz shock caused every light lense and piece of glass on the car to break. broke the rear diff mount area, folded the 6 spoke wheels over.. my guess is a tree or telephone pole. its sad cuz that was my first car outve highschool then i sold it only to be outve my hands for 2 wks then dumped off at the junkyard.

hard impact
An extremely hard side impact that either tweaked the entire car or cause such a shock wave at impact that all the glass shattered would lead me to conclude that the transmission would have taken severe g force damage and that any load bearing surfaces like bearing would now be damaged, dinged or nicked enough to be the beginning of a major failure.

Amazing piece of karma here - that your old car ends up wrecked and you are thinking of salvaging from it... The spirits are operational!
It's your call. It's a cheap trans by comparison but PredatorZ and I both think it's a shot in the dark. If you really need a new trans for you current Z, develop a realistic budget for that and look elsewhere first. If nothing you can afford shows up out there, go for this one and hope for few surprises.

Good chance
There is a good chance the transmission is serviceable, i would get a rebuild kit for it and have a shop do it or find somebody like Theramz that can do them in the dark, and help you do it. If you do buy the trans I would make it perfectly clear that there is obvious damage to the exterior and most likely to the inner workings and that a reasonable discount or warranty would be only fair. I would only buy it for cheap with the assumption it may only be good for parts, that way you should be able to negotiate the best price.

those are all good thoughts on the idea.. thanks for your input on the subject.
I dont think anyone knows of or wants to buy that trans i looked at so maybe in the future il be able to snag it up for parts or whatnot. I did take the zx brake booster outve it while i was there so i feel good about getting something. haha
I think waiting for the right transmition is going to be my best bet. meanwhile il just beat on them 4 speeds i got.
thanks all
