after market performance
I was woundering how much power have some of you punch out N/a on the L28? I am looking for after market parts to drasticly alter the amount of power I have meaning intake manifold, pistons, exaust header, diffrential gears, injectors, throtle valves etc. anything that would make the car excelerat like those damn LS1 cars that they have done up now days. I know it won't compare, but it would probably stand up for a good little ways.
I want super power, but stay naturally asperated.

To get more power from an n/a L28:
-Bore'd & stroke'd block
-3 or 5 angle valve grind
-shaved head w/ 1mm MLS headgasket
-mild or hot cam
-titanium valve retainers & higher strength valves & springs
-performance header & exhaust
-ported intake
-aftermarket fuel & spark control
--4.11 gears
yada yada yada
SHADY has a pretty nice n/a setup... I think he's pushing 220hp???

the block bor, head porting, head shaving is a given, but what I mean by after market is pistons. if I bor the block I don't know where to get the over sized pistons, or the new valves for that matter.
Of course I didn't mean like super power like the LS1 but I mean every thing the engine can posibly push out on its own.
if any one knows of a place were I can find over sized pistons for the engine it would be helpful.
I have an N42 head on it with the msa header so that helped me a lot. Oh yea a stage 3 cam is in the head to.
I am going for a 69mm throttle valve next. I have new injetors and distributor to. I was thinking about a MSD module.

You will NEVER, EVER, NEVER, EVER be able to accelerate like "those damn LS1 cars" with an NA L28. Not going to happen. No matter how much work you put into your L28. Even an L28ET is going to have a very hard time keeping up with an LS1 powered Z. And thats with a stock LS1.

acutally msa dose not offer the pistons. I called them a long time ago when they said they did and they told me that they actually did not have them because no one would order them.

They'll make pistons however you want them. And they don't charge an absurd price to do it either.

They did stop making the .020 over a couple years ago... which is good, cuz if ya gunna bore it, at least go .040.

it being sunday and all I cant call msa and ask how much for the 40 over now. have to wait for monday, but I need to ask about shims for the cam towers if I am shaving the head.
I was thinking it would be better to shave the deck instead of the head do to the head being alluminum and needing all the strength it can get.

i got .040 over pistons from the machine shop. if you want some serious details about na applications just ask, but i aint gonna type it right now it would take a whole page to tell you everything i did to squeeze every pony out of this na. specially if your not too interested, that and it would give away my secrets. if you want to know the absolute fastest an na 280zx can go in the quarter. its about 13.5, on a perfect day with perfect tuning with a perfect launch. my na can keep up with the best but you gotta have about 6000 bucks cdn for what i got, and i even assembled everything, that was just machine work and parts. everything is about balance and drivability, mines streetable, but it takes 92 octane min. so its an expense every day, not just once. 100 bucks cdn gets me 300km. you do your own math.

Well I get the bor job $10 a hole so there is $60
pistons 40 over I don't know the price
deck shaved $40
Head ported and polished $120
I think I do need the valves angle grind, I don't know what the guy charges on that
1mm head gasket what ever that cost
I am looking at around $400 at the most if you ask me
the machine shop by my house is cheep. very relyable to.

but yes I am verry curious about some of your secrets.
I am not just one of those ricer guys that puts a bottle in truck. I wont the true potential out of the engine. Engine power is pride for me.

Just tell them to take it easy on the port an polish if they haven't done too many L series heads. I've seen some good shops ruin heads cause they got over zealous with a head they weren't familiar with.

I think I paid $300 for my .040 pistons (though that was 5 years ago) and $99 for my 2mm MLS headgasket (I think they're $150 for either 1 or 2mm now).
I also got my rods magna fluxed & cross peened (both... or one of those... I can't remember right now).
Anyway, please just remember that this L28 engine was a good engine, but isn't going to crank out 300 - 400 hp without some major MAJOR help.... which would prolly cost more than dropping in a stock LT1. You need to weigh the money vs reality.

thanx for the tip man.
I will defanately take your advice on that. this is not the only N42 head I have, but like you sayed I don't want them buchering any of them. I do need a back up one.

again with the LT1 thing, I wasn't trying to make a cross examination, or comparison.
I was meaning make a true monster out of what the factory had put out the LT1 would be the monster of the camero my L28 would be a monster to the 280.

you want power do ya, all prices in cdn. the head gasket is 200, pistons are about 40 a piece (flat top) .040" 50 a hole then get them coated to avoid detonation 40 a piece. get your rotating assy balanced 150, (this is crucial),get floating pins put in your pistons 200, get a 260 dur, 111deg lobe sep, .5" lift cam min 400. new rockers (lighten the tips) and lash pads 600 from nissan. get a p79 head decked .080" and the tower spacers . then port and polish (1000), dont let the machine shop try to remove the sleeves, there cast into the head. high rate valve spring, get rid of the secondary, and try to get bee hive style. 1000 bucks - its worth it.+ bigger valves, lighten the flywheel and balance it, dont get an aluminum one its not streetable 100. header 200, big bore tb 320, msd ignition 400, then the block, debur and paint inside. bore out, then relieve next to the valves as big as the gasket will go but above the ring line, this makes less interferance for intake and exhaust gasses - worth it. better oil pump, high volume + pressure, not just pressure 300 bucks. all this will get you about 230 rear wheel horse power, i didnt do 2 things and now i kick myself (like balance the bottom end and bigger valves) that will all cost about 5700 buck cdn. thats just a basic esimate and its in cdn. and now you all know what i got.
