Unhappy Alright, I Cannont Figure It Out! Grrrr!

just when i thought my car was running beautifully its starting to mess up again, ill start off with what i did recently to get the 82 280zx turbo running good, i replaced as many wires and cleaned as many contacts i could and cleaned up the ecu and it was running perfect, now the car bearly accelerates, i can hear the turbo spinning, but it doesnt accelerate, then when enough pressure builds up, i hear a poping noise.??? i think the popping noise could be the BOV, its the original, and i lifted the cap up and let it go and it made a similar noise that i was hearing, so i think that it has to be with the air building up pressure and not releasing right, what do you guys think, ive been working on this problem forever, replaced afm, all vacumm lines, ect.... what else could it be.

Do you have an air/fuel gauge hooked up? Have you set the timing to 20 degrees? And the stock 280zxt doesn't have a BOV... just an emergency pop off valve on the intake manifold. It chirps like a squirrel when you're boosting too much.

Definitely check your timing. This sounds like the problem I was just recently having. The previous owner had put in an entirely new distributor, cap, and rotor after I guess the old one kinda crapped out. He set the timing and it was doing this. Problem was he set the timing with the Throttle Position Sensor still connected. Make sure you disconnect the TPS when setting your timing.

while your car is running, wiggle the wires around a bit that are going into the back of the AFM connector. If the idle changes a little then you're probasbly not getting good connections.

no fuel gauge hooked up yet, but soon to be, and my mistake on tbe BOV thing, i thought they were the same thing, but the pop off valve pops when i try to get the car to accelerate, it feels like somethings plugging the air flow from exiting the turbo. and how do you measure 20* for the distributor

If you look at the crank pulley from the passenger side of the car, you'll notice there's a little plate alongside the crankshaft pulley. It has notches and numbers. Every notch is 2 I believe. You need to find 20 on the plate and mark it with white out or something visible.

the haynes and FSM both have a great section on checking and setting timing

Do you have a timing light??? If not then you cant check the timing.

I'm sure they do. Buying a timing light would be a VERY good investment as well.

First thing to do is unplug your 02 sensor and see if it still happens on an extended test drive.

Autozone doesn't loan out timing lights. Dont ask me why not. It's not on any of their online loaner tool lists either.

corroded fuel injectors clips ? my 280zxt had them.. and some times the fuel injectors didnt want to fire.. so i took a long flat head screw driver and put it onto the plastic part of the injector and held the plastic end to my ear to hear the " clicking " sound a fuel injectors makes when its opening and closeing right...

All the more reason for checking the 02 sensor.
