The key here is the tag #. Nothing else matters.

Go forth my children and find GOOD T5's!

Actually, one of the reasons I REALLY LIKE the T5 is it's weight. A fully built T5 can weigh as little as 85 lbs!

A Tremec 3550 will weigh about 130 lbs!
You're just a walking, talking Datsun encyclopedia . . .so when you wanna do this swap for me . . .er . . i mean with me?

Actually, with the taller gears in the Ford/Chevy T5's you'll probably get better gas mileage as well.

Most were in the 2.9x:1 range where the Datsun T5 has a VERY short 3.5:1. The stock Nissan/Datsun NA 5 speed had 3.32:1 in 1979, 3.062:1 in '80 to '83 so no major changes are necessary.

Apollo,

As soon as you get my Durango fixed... I mean help me fix my Durnago...

P.S.
The strut tower bar does't fit the 240z...

I guess I should re-phrase that... I've DONE tradework once, and it worked ok... I've had 2 diff guys try to get me to do trade work for them, in exchange for 280zx's, but they wanted outrageous amounts of work (much more than the cost of the car). And both times after saying NO... I ended up being stalked & threatened (and these are grown up men). YIKES!

Ok, those guys need a life. You want to 'buy' their cars and they agree for you to work off the 'debt' and when you decide not to 'buy' the cars, they stalk YOU?!

WTF?

thats good info on T5 there lww...im in luck for that since we have shitloads of mustangs in the junkyards so it shouldnt be hard to find...its gonna be a gamble tho since they probably have been abused already by whoever drove the car, but still better then what i got in there now...

I wouldn't be so concerned about the abuse part. The key is to get a WC case to use. Once you have the 'good' case, you can rebuild it without fear of it grenading on you for a nice long while.

The great thing about mustangs, is that the car usually falls apart long before the tranny can get damaged

Actually, here's a good description and breakdown of all the T5's used in Ford's and their specific differences and power capabilities.

http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/349.shtml

The good part is, any of the WC models can and should be rebuilt with all the 'good' parts.

It makes no sense to use brass syncro's in your newly rebuilt T5.

I would focus on the 90 to 93 Mustang V8's. The 94 & 95's will have to have their input shaft shortened to fit our bell housing and not stick out too far.

And don't overlook the V8 Camaros and Firebirds. If you come across one cheap, take the leap.

One thing I almost forgot. You'll need to scavange a tranny cross member from a T5 280ZX Turbo or fabricate one yourself. They are shaped differently to accomodate the mount points on the T5 vs NA.

If you have the money and don't want to wait or risk the need for a rebuild you can also get one from Summit:

http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...=egnsearch.asp

You'll still need the Datsun bell housing and the tranny cross member, but you'll get the best T5 design.

Nice info lww. I saw those trannies in the Summit Catalog. A bit pricey for me. It would figure the T5 would be so light too since it's a physically small trans. I was amazed when I did the clutch on my Mustang. I was able to lift the tranny without too much trouble by myself.

QUOTE: taking off in 2nd or accelerating slowly from 20mph in 4th gear or something like that... the gears inside the transmission seem to hum or vibrate a little. That's what it sounds like to me. It goes away by 2000 rpm or so.

Nothing wrong but your habits, your car has a lot of torque, a poopy engine wont allow you to take of in such speeds in such gears.. 1th gear "at or around" 15 mph, 2=25, 3=35 4=45 mph, this number by manufacturer, people who know more than me n you.
High gearing will, eventually, destroy any car as well as low (vibrations you mention) peace.

I have been running the T5 tranny for ten years, yes its noiser but not that much. You can use noise canceling pads on the underside of the tranny tunnel to reduce some sound. It's the same product they line fiberglass fenders with, check with a speed shop.

I installed needle bearings instead of the stock pilot bushing, mixed type F auto tranny fluid with 90wt gear oil at a 1 to 6 ratio, shifting smoothed out for very quick short shifting and no noticeable wear on the tranny after 60k miles.

Went through several driveshafts until I found a shop that knew what they were doing and made a beefer replacement shaft.

Now things are changing. 1st and 2nd gear make rattle and clicking sounds when accelerating. Under full throttle 2nd gear cracks and snaps like the gears are loose inside the rear of the transmission. I don't have the rubber sound insulater under the shift boot right now so I can hear this stuff better. I don't remember the transmission making this kind of noise before. I suppose I could check the oil level... this thing better not blow up on me. I need this car to just drive!

You could always cut out the floor boards and go Flinstones if the tranny gives out. I'd remove the engine and trans though to make it easier on the legs

Here's some advice: Just when you think it's about to give out, let someone else drive the car and when they call you up saying that the tranny just wen out you can get all pissed off and make them cover the cost Pretty F'd up huh? But hey, if you don't like the person anyways...

well, too late now. It got much worse very quickly after work yesturday. My car is down for a while...

If I end up needing to pull the tranny AGAIN, I'm pulling the engine too. In goes the L28 turbo with T5 attached.

can other trannies be swapped onto the T5 bellhousing pattern? it seems like if BorG Warner made it, other GM trannies should fit. why if you were racing only, a muncie m22 would be nice.

Yes, but you have to get a custom drive shaft made to fit the output shaft of the new tranny (Ford or Chevy) and you may have to convert the clutch to hydraulic as well as make sure the input shaft of the tranny isn't too long for the L6.

Does anyone know where I can get replacement bushings for the shifter in the transmission? My shifter is very loose, and does not return to center by itself.

Any information would be a great help.

Thanks.

I would think that is easy to find at most any performance shop. T5's are very common. Any bushings for a 85-93 Mustang T5 should be the same.
