burning underhood

i got a 81 280zx nt. under hard acceleration it smells like somethings burning under the hood. ive checked a few times but i am not entirely certain of what it is. also i was caught in the rain recently and it squealed under hard acceleration...so therefore im thinking its my fan belt...

not really sure what this could be, what do u think?

thanks for your help guys!!!

Yeah it sounds like one of the three belts in there, could be out of line or could be loose and jumping off track

i have popped the hood on several occasions to check it out...cant really find it though. i checked all belt tensions, seems good. its really snug. however the edges are "glossy" like its been slipping. so i dont really know. i think ill just replace the belts in the front. and leave the timing belt alone.

anyways, thanks for your help guys.
every response helps.

The 3 V-belts in front can easily be replaced. The 280ZX has no timing belt. it is a timing chain under the front cover of the engine. It never slips.

[thats seriously the look I gave when I read that]

when your at the parts store, get a chiltons or hains manual for your car.
then read it from cover to cover like a book. Best $20 you can spend on your car.

Hopefully this gets you started on getting to know your car very well.
Iv been at this for a bit and have gone far past general maintenance but I still have my first tattered, greasy chiltons manual and a copy of the FSM.

They are never not useful.

for those that are not willing (or able) to learn and get their hands good and dirty they need to either:

A: sell there car
or
B: get deep pockets

The Datsun 280ZX 83 2+2 was the first thing i ever turned a wrench on. factory it was a 83 2+2 auto with a 3:54 and 364K miles. Now it's a 83 2+2 with a nice sound system replaced the back seat, 5 speed and a 3:90. 402K miles. and still runs like a champ. best fckin car EVER!

i must ask what kind of burning, it could be tire smoke? lol or is it more electrical, or is it exhaust fumes coming thru rust holes, or something
