cant get my 83 over 85mph

i jus got a great deal on a clean 83 zx wit 5spd and digi dash.. well car runs well.. drives fine.. but i finally tried to get on it and i discovered it pops out of first every once in a while which i suspect i have low manual fluid so ill be changing that what kinda fluid should i be using i want something fully synthetic also the biggest thing that bothers me is that i cant get my car to go over 85mph... i changed the fuel filter hoping that was the problem.. nothing changed.. i changed the plugs.. nothing changed.. and changed the airfilter. nothign changed.. i even added a cone filter replacing the airbox after that nothing changed...... the cap, rotor, and wires all look good. and the car has all new injectors.. got this car from a really old guy that has the shakes too bad to get up on the car enough to notice it didnt go over 85, but he didnt know it would jump out of 1st.. to me the car is a bit sluggish.. i mean it pulls nice in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd... but after that it jus becomes crap.. the clutch isnt slipping at all either.. what should i check now..i was thinkin change the fuel pump.. but can i get some opinions

Welcome to ZDriver!

Are you sure you're not accelerating anymore above 85? The speedo only goes to 85, so after that you have to watch your rpm to know your speed.

ok wow... i didnt know that.. well like i said it is probably pulling to around 90.. but then u will start to feel it pull back (like fuel cut to keep the speed at the cars limit) which is the actual set speed limit..

There is no speed limiter on the 280zx's... I think you are experiencing something like the ”Placebo Effect”

details details....

so there ya have it. The speedo stops @ 85... but if your RPM's are still increasing, you are still accelerating.

You'll need a 79 analog speedo... it's the only one that goes to 130. 80-83 went to 85.

There is a perfectly logical explanation for all of this. OBVIOUSLY, his Z has hit the space-time continuom. What is happening is that at precisely 88mph you're actually reversing the rotation of the earth. So its not your car slowing down, it's time speeding up as you travel into the future. This is why Nissan limited the speedo to 85mph; it was an apparent attempt at preventing time travel. Apparently, a previous owner installed one of these:
Run a car-fax report and see if the names Brown or McFly come up

yeah and get all the wiring off the 79 also, so the swap will be complete, use the search button, and you'll find all your anwsers, and you should get the tri pod gauges, do you'll have a analog clock also...seeing that the digital sucks.

Where you located I've got a complete 79 unit. Dark blue. you need to make some wiring changes. There is a post somewhere I read from a guy that went into his dige gages and found corroded connectors. He got his running. But you still stuck with the 85 mph speedo.
