its pretty self explanatory if you look atit hard enough and think about its name. first off its name, charcoal canister. what is charcoal used for? filtration. what is this hooked up to? Vac lines and a vent line. so its obvious that its to keep fumes out of the engine bay really. thats it. otherwise the car cabin CAN start to smell like exhaust or gasoline. now thinking about its purpose... do you think it can be removed? do you think it will effect its performance? idk why i help you still....
also, this could have EASILY been figure out by searching

this is from my understanding feel free to correct me but this is from personal exp:
you have a line coming from your gas tank that goes to it, then it filters the vapors from the gas tank and then "purges" those vapors into your intake to be burned. if you remove it you NEED to cap off the gas tank line and relieve pressure every once in a while by pulling the cap off or when you open your gas cap it will release the pressure, and trust me it builds up pressure. then you need to follow the vacuum lines to your intake, one goes to the throttle body on the bottom, and the other (it dark out right now and this is off the memory of having my turbo zx for a week) goes to the intake tube that goes to the turbo, plug those 2 lines and everything should be golden. i never had any issues in my miata taking out my canister, and when i get my zxt running right i dont expect any problems. the only reason i think cars have the canister is for emissions. the fumes that come from the gas tank are harmful to the o-zone laddy da so if you live somewhere with emmission i would leave the canister in with the lines or you might, idk i live in wyo with no emmisions testing, fail an emmissions test. good luck

From my understanding, this thread is from April.
And for the record, both "carbon canister" and "charcoal canister" are correct, but carbon, in itself, does not filter odors... charcoal (a carbon compound) is used for filtration because it is absorbent.
