carbureted ka24
This isn't exactly a z, but it's a datsun at least.

This guy has a carbureted ka24. I didn't even know that could be done. Is doing something like this a simple bolt on thing or did this guy have to fab up some sort of an adapter to install weber carbs on his engine. I'm really interested, because this guy is able to drop in a more modern engine into his car without having to worry about installing a whole wiring harness and ecu. Right?

ya, I emailed the owner. He said he just cut the stock manifold and welded the carb flanges to the manifold He doesn't have a wiring hatness or ecu. He said he did it so he can easily tune the car without having to mess with the ecu and to be more original. He also sid he had to make a distributor for the engine.
I have no clue as to how someone would make a distributor for the engine though

so that crane unit you're talking. Is that what people use when they convert their l28s to carbureted. Is there more that has to be done. Like the ignition or any other electrical, or does all of that stuff work indepedent from the ecu?

The only thing the ecu contols or receives a signal from are parts related to engine control )i.e. sensors, injectors, etc.). So you can just rip out all the wiring accociated with the ecu if switching to carburation. The only thing you would then need to wire up is the ignition which is a walk in the park on these older cars. You could just wire in the Crane unit running it from your existing ignition switch and voila! Carburated L28. I also beleive you will have to run an electric fuel pump, but not the FI one, way too much pressure for a carbureted vehicle!! Which would also be wired to your ignition switch.

MSA has them as well. I've tried a couple local speedshops when I lived in Cali, but they both told me the same thing. That the manufacturer isn't producing them at the time and doesn't have any in stock. So maybe MSA and VB just have a bunch stockpiled or something? I don't know. I

Carburated KA24
Nissan actually does make a intake manifold to adapt sidedraft carbs to the SOHC KA. The KA is essentially an L series motor so the distributor from an L series actually bolts right on. Relieving the issue of having to use the ECU for spark.

The SOHC engine was actually used in race cars before it was ever put in a truck. One of those race cars raced in the Rolex 24 in the early 90's.It used a carburated SOHC KA24 that put out over 300hp.
