charging troubles

I just changed the alternator in my '83 turbo. Still not charging. I hear that if the battery light doesn't work the alternator won't charge even if it is good. Is there any truth to this? If so, what light is it? There is no light labeled "battery" or "alternator". There is one labeled "light and key" which does not come on. I can't remember if it ever did but it seems like it did.

By the way, the battery is fine...

Two things:
Along the right side of the engine compartment check your fusable links. One I think is related to the charging ciruit. Also, further forward there is a little box with relays in it. One of those is for the charging system. Try swapping relays around for now.
Strange thing on my car, one relay was bad and the charging system would charge at 10v but kick up to 14.4 and stay there after I revved the engine to 4000 rpm. I replaced the relay and it solved the problem.

Thanks, my links are fine, I'll have to check the relays, though.
