Cruise Control

Hello Everyone,

I have a quick question about the Cruise Control on my 1980 ZX.

My speedo cable is hanging up at times, the needle on the MPH gauge pulsates up to about 40-43 MPH anything above that the needle will peg at either 0 or 80 MPH. My question is can this symptom be one of the reasons why my cruise is not working? I realize that there are several other things that I will need to check ie. Vacuum & Electrical componets but am not sure if the speedo cable can effect the cruise control operation? I have all ready replaceded all the little round pads on the brake and clutch arms that engage & disengage the switches, tested the cruise control main switch, turn signal/cruise control switch on the column. I still need to look at the relay and controller unit under the passange seat and the vacuum soleniods in the engine compartment.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Phil

Indeed, a jumping speedo could cause cruise control not to function properly. A jumping speedo is usually a kinked cable, dying speedo, maybe the speedo cog in the tranny is loose / stripped, maybe the cable just needs some grease. You'll never know until you tear into it.

Start w/ the basics.

Thanks Nismo,

I appreciate the response Speedo Cog in the Tranny is fine, I'm going to check the short speedo cable for kinks I have a new spare if needed.

mine used to wobble a bit, pulling in the cable from the engine side of the firewall and taking up the slack seemed to help for some reason
