EGR Valve? Do you need it?

EGR Valve? Do you need it?
Recently we tried to take off an EGR Valve because it was stuck open and we broke one of the studs. So we took it off and did the easy thing to do and put a plate over it and called it good. So will this hurt the engine or anything bad ?
Some Pics in gallery.
I looked in the Haynes guide book and they didn't have it on some 280zx N/A's but they did on turbos? My engine is a N/A but it did have an EGR valve

Yeah it's just there to reduce combustion chamber temp. to reduce NoX. It's shouldn't adversely affect your engine at all. The temp. reduction doesn't affect drivability, it's strictly an emissions CONTROL device. Just make sure your exhaust is exiting all the way out back from the car. NoX is some nasty stuff and if it starts creaping up in your car with the windows up while you cruising real slow or sitting in traffic it'll start to make you whoozy . And that's a negative on affecting hp. Maybe fractions of a single hp. It doesn't let enough exhaust gas into the chamber in the first place to affect performance.
