350s are the most common v8. Go to a junk yard and tell them that you want a running engine and tranny. You can get both for 600. If money is a factor, then make sure that it is carbed and not EFI. After that get the mounts, drive shaft, radiator, cables, etc... You should be good to go. But does anyone know how the smog works?? Will it pass??

ok... my input...

dont switch to v8, if you want power the v8 has power but that does not mean it will make your car any faster than a good s6, these 6s in these cars are highly underestimated and if tweaked up can kick a v8s butt....
my suggestion would be to just find a turbo motor and switch your motor and ecu, rather than buy a whole other engine, a whole other tranny, with another ecu and having to go about rebuilding that and changing and modifying all that wonderful stuff.

stick with the s6, is equally as good as a v8 in most aspects..

Even a dirt cheap junk yard engine with all conversion parts will cost you $1500-2000 to put in. It will be a pretty slow V8 at that.

If you don't have $800 to buy a proper 280ZX turbo engine, then why try to swap engines? The turbo swap is actually easier as far as fabrication and technical skills go.

Give us an idea of what kind of monthly expenses you can spare or how much you want the total project to cost. How much experience do you have with cars? Are you in an apartment with the 280ZX as your only car or do you have a house, garage, and a different vehicle to drive?

I have under $2500 in my project, including original purchase of my ZX. It runs low 13's in the quarter and holds its own on a road course. Careful shopping and fabrication skills can make it possible to build a quick Hybrid ZX for little money.

Good job! That's a nice clean swap you did.

Also, you can get complete 280ZX turbo car for $200. Spdsk8r's car and a $200 turbo car are not common prices for upgrades.

A mildly upgraded 280ZX turbo can run low 13's as well. But a stock turbo engine is cheaper and slower than your V8.

To me it sounded at first like this guy had a couple hundred bucks and wanted to bolt on a junk yard turbo onto his car and call it good. We really need more info to give proper advice for his situation.

I have a lead on the 82 L28 turbo but the engine bay has been in a fire.
all the plastic is burnt and the wires. I want to take out my L24E and put in the L28 turbo. How do I know if the engine is good enough to use? And how much should I pay for it. It is an P90 head and a F54 block. This is going into my 83 maxima
Cheers

Apple, speed costs money ... how fast do you want to go?

As the others have said before, we would need to know what you have to spend, and what is available to you, and over a certain period of time. Unless you're a really lucky son-of-a-gun, or have hookups with EBay or friends in high places, there's very little hope of building a "cheap" turbo Z; or a non-turbo for that matter.

Keep this in mind as well - "If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have the time to do it over?"

Hope this helps,
-Dave
