front mount intercooler
so if adding a larger FMIC to a turbo car means colder, denser air, and subsequently more power. (and the ability to safely run more boost) Has anyone mounted an FMIC to their turbo 280zx? I know it would require a load of work, but i'm sure it could be done

It doesn't take that much work. You will need to fabricate some intake piping though and you may have to cut a hole in your radiator support to plumb the pipes through there.

I have an i/c on my ZX which I think I the same one as lww's. It's a Spearco i/c. The work itself isn't too hard, it's just the initial mock up and test fit that takes time. Helps if you have a Dremel for some of the cuts and stuff.

It should cool the intake charge to near ambient while minimizing the loss in boost pressure.
There's a whole science around these things. Get Corky Bell's book Maximum Boost and you'll get a good education out of it as well.

thanks everyone, yes, i understand quality is more important than size.
I just picked up my first Z, it's an 83 turbo, with 138k on the clock, it needs a new air flow sensor, intake mani gasket, an idle control valve, and some misc bits and pieces. I got it for $550, with 2 new tires.
If anyone has spare turbo parts (like those listed above) or can hook me up, i'd really appreciate it.

Is the intercooler piping easier to run if the inlet and outlets of the intercooler are on the same side? Since the turbo and intake manifold are on the left side of the engine, I was thinking if it might be easier to run the piping only through the left side of the radiator area. Though I don't know if there's enough space to cut through to run 2 pipes.
