Gas Mileage Experiment:

Anything over 3500 on a 280zx turbo ecu puts it into open loop so the afm is what determines mixture at that point.
Sadly, when the speed limit was raised, many an older Z car now runs open loop around the speed limit.

i don't know about mine, just bought the car couple of weeks ago. When i got it it had less than a half tank, i reset the trip meter then, im at a quarter and have 80 something miles so times four equals, 320 or so per tank.divided by 20 equals 16 no i don't thats right, i'll try when i get paid

All aside my trip to Peoria a couple weeks ago, increased my mpg to 23, the tank before last. Not bad considering I am still not running where I should be.

You only got 23mpg highway?? I just got 22 mpg overall in my turbo and I thought that was bad. My NA would get 22-25 overall around town and such. I got 30-32mpg highway on my trip to California and back with the NA engine at 230,000 miles.

I am excited!
I guess I was off quite a bit on my mileage estimate. I kept better track of it this time and it is not around 18 mpg like I thought it is closer to 22.4 mpg in town...I think it is very safe to say that with a 5 speed, correct tires, O2 sensor, and wildmans header I will be above 30 mpg with no problems, maybe even that in town!!! Who needs a new car that says it get's 30 mpg...they probably have 10 gallon gas tanks so it defets the perpose of the good mileage right? Oh I can go 300+ miles on a tank of gas on my '06-'07 whatever...Oh yeah well I can go 600+ miles on a tank in my 1982 Nissan 280ZX Slick Top Coupe BABY!!!! AND STILL SMOKE THE TIRES!!!
Nissan, we are driven.

30mpg in town might be a stretch, but with a properly tuned car, you should be able to get around 25+ with the 5-speed.
What do you mean by 'correct tires'?
If your tires are smaller than the stock diameter, you may actually be getting less mileage, but it'll look better because your speedo is reading too fast and running up the odometer faster than it should.

It was a 1981 280zx turbo stock and the turbo crapped out halfway down so I pulled into a dennys, had lunch and cut up the metal shield of a floppy disc.
I undid the two bolts on the turbo drain tube and used the thin piece of stainless I had made from the floppy to block the oil drain so I wouldn't pump exhaust into the pan.
Then I disconnected the waste gate and replaced the T fitting with the oil pressure sensor.
Car still got 18mpg though I had problems with hills in that I had to go about 90 down them to still be at 55 at the top of the next one.
It was auto 3 speed with 3.54
Of course, I had disconnected the 02 sensor before the trip and played with the spring to net a relatively lean mixture during steady state cruising.
It was hairy in traffic but not as hairy as when I towed a maxima on a car dolley with the same car.
