I got 27mpg on the drive to MSA this year in my '72 240Z with SU's and a 5-speed out of an '83 NA ZX.

Anything over 3500 on a 280zx turbo ecu puts it into open loop so the afm is what determines mixture at that point.

Sadly, when the speed limit was raised, many an older Z car now runs open loop around the speed limit.

I usually get 22 in the city and 26.5 on the freeway. I fill it up, reset the trip odometer. When I fill up again I divide the miles traveled by the gallons it takes to fill up again.

Roughly after you get below a quarter tank, which is less than 7 gallons or so. If you have a 21 gallon tank like me.

All aside my trip to Peoria a couple weeks ago, increased my mpg to 23, the tank before last. Not bad considering I am still not running where I should be.

You only got 23mpg highway?? I just got 22 mpg overall in my turbo and I thought that was bad. My NA would get 22-25 overall around town and such. I got 30-32mpg highway on my trip to California and back with the NA engine at 230,000 miles.

Wink I am excited!

I guess I was off quite a bit on my mileage estimate. I kept better track of it this time and it is not around 18 mpg like I thought it is closer to 22.4 mpg in town...I think it is very safe to say that with a 5 speed, correct tires, O2 sensor, and wildmans header I will be above 30 mpg with no problems, maybe even that in town!!! Who needs a new car that says it get's 30 mpg...they probably have 10 gallon gas tanks so it defets the perpose of the good mileage right? Oh I can go 300+ miles on a tank of gas on my '06-'07 whatever...Oh yeah well I can go 600+ miles on a tank in my 1982 Nissan 280ZX Slick Top Coupe BABY!!!! AND STILL SMOKE THE TIRES!!!

Nissan, we are driven.

30mpg in town might be a stretch, but with a properly tuned car, you should be able to get around 25+ with the 5-speed.

What do you mean by 'correct tires'?

If your tires are smaller than the stock diameter, you may actually be getting less mileage, but it'll look better because your speedo is reading too fast and running up the odometer faster than it should.

Well factory size for my non turbo is 195/75/R14, my current tire size is 205/50/R15 and are WAY smaller in outside diameter than the factory tires. In 3rd gear at 55mph by the spedo which is actually 45-47 mph I am at 3,000rpm's. Once I get the 215/60/R15 tires I will be about one half inch larger in diameter than the factory tire size and about 1 mph off on the spedo in my favor. But yes I think you may be right on the thinking the mileage looks better than it is. Good thing every where I go is close to me so I am not racking up the miles...hell I have only put like 1,500 miles on the car since I joined this forum and thats going by the wrong tire size and spedo reading so in fact probably less than 1,500 miles. I do need the new tires though so it stops putting on miles faster than it really is.

It was a 1981 280zx turbo stock and the turbo crapped out halfway down so I pulled into a dennys, had lunch and cut up the metal shield of a floppy disc.

I undid the two bolts on the turbo drain tube and used the thin piece of stainless I had made from the floppy to block the oil drain so I wouldn't pump exhaust into the pan.

Then I disconnected the waste gate and replaced the T fitting with the oil pressure sensor.

Car still got 18mpg though I had problems with hills in that I had to go about 90 down them to still be at 55 at the top of the next one.

It was auto 3 speed with 3.54

Of course, I had disconnected the 02 sensor before the trip and played with the spring to net a relatively lean mixture during steady state cruising.

It was hairy in traffic but not as hairy as when I towed a maxima on a car dolley with the same car.
Cool! Mc Gyver is runner up on this one, make me wonder if a manual tranny would make you better negotiate the hills..
