If you are turboing a non-turbo engine, how much boost do you expect to run? You may not need an intercooler.

I know that SinCityZ runs without an intercooler at 15psi on his tuned turbo engine, and it's safe. I would assume, with an NA engine, no IC, and less than 8-10 pounds, would be alright. If you're looking for a cheap and effective cooler, grab one from a junkyard DSM or Volvo (I can snag a Volvo IC from an '87 740 for $45 at a local yard).

i just bought a spearco intercooler....

27" by 3" by 12"

it might be an overkill for you since you plan on stock turbo hehehe

but you need to tell us how much boost you want.

I'm using a Spearco unit that was for a Turbo Supra (7M-GTE motor).

well my car is a 79 non turbo so i was wondering would it be stupid of me or would it do anything and what all do i need to make this intercooler be effective in my z i pretty much got a good idea about getting one and why does it seem that volvos benefit us so much

Are you planning to put a turbo on this car? If not, the intercooler is a waste of time. It's only used to bring the intake charge that is heated by the compression of turbo charging back down to as close to ambient temperature as possible.

On a non-turbo car, you're already bringing in 'ambient' temperature air into your intake since there's no additional heating of the intake charge from turbo compression.

This is why everyone keeps asking how much boost you want to run before answering your question. If you are planning to turbo your NA car, even though you can do it without, I would do it for nothing other than a safety net. In the event you get a lean mixture the intercooler will give you a greater margin of error before you blow a head gasket or melt a piston.

Dorifto- You said a dsm intercooler will work. I found a lot of them on ebay for cheap. If I did get one of those what would I just have to make some custom piping. And would I mount it on the side or the front? Oh ya and mine is for a turbo car, I just want something small so I can rasie the boost safely. Thanks

You always mount the intercooler in the front. In front of the radiator so it gets the cool air first.

now i know this sounds kinda retarded but im still new to the tuning industry...how exactly does an intercooler work? i understand that it pulls in the air to supply the turbos but what other purpose is there? and why is it called "intercooler"?

ok well here it is.

it doesnt pull in air to supply the turboes...it comes after the air has been compressed and sent into your engine.

when the turbo compresses air into your engine, it also heats the air up...so if you want your engine to suck in cool air...you get an intercooler ...which is like a radiator for air....all it does is cool air...

The DSM intercooler should work - yes custom piping is required, but because of the relatively compact size of the DSM core, mounting it in various places is easier. I've seen a turbo Z once that had a DSM core mounted in place of the bend in the intake (going from the turbo outlet to the throttle butterfly) - it worked surprisingly well. He also added a scoop in the hood for it, so technically you could call it a top-mount or side-mount cooler ... I think .
