Need more info

Is there a list compiled of ZX vendors and info? Ive been here and read almost all the current posts, and checked out Hybridz, but I want more. Im looking for more info on engine internals and specs and electronic upgrades. Ive heard about the z31 ecu swaps on the zxts, can it be done on a NA car and is it worth it for a mildly modded motor?

There are only a few vendors.
Motorsport Auto
Victoria British
Modern Motorsports
Z Therapy (SU carbs)

That's basicaly it. Motorsport Auto is huge. If you're getting generic items for a turbo or for custom cooling system then you can search through Summit Racing's online catalog. You have to know what you're looking for though.

Ignition upgrades aren't worth it unless you're running a really high rpm application. Either keep the stock system or go with Direct Ignition. None of that MSD stuff is nessisary.

The Z31 turbo ECU will not do anything for your NA application. The Z31 NA ecu probably does nothing either. The Z31 turbo ECU makes changes in the fuel mixture based on reading it gets. the turbo has so many more variables and the later ECU adjusts for those variables. The 280ZX turbo ECU is more 'preset' for the factory turbo stuff. For your NA application, a nice aftermarket fuelpressure regulator and the stock electronics will probably do fine.

Are you talking about converting to a distributorless ignition system? What's involved with that? I assume I'd have to swap out for a standalone for that; is Megasquirt capable of that conversion?

Yes, that is a distributorless system.
I don't know what is involved with that besides lots of money.
MegasquirtNspark 'might' be, but you can probalby look that up on their Yahoo forum or on their website. I haven't looked into it much. I'm keeping the factory electronics.

Hey heat, check out Electromotive (or Electramotive, I can never remember which is which. But one has nothing to do with cars). They specialize in Distributorless Ignitions and engine management. They sell a direct ignition kit that doesn't need any supporting electronics to work. It can even be run on carburated vehicles without fuel injection. But they are the best of the best when it comes to this stuff.

I don't know the website but I'm sure you can run a search. If one don't work try the other name. The only difference is if it's an O or an A there in the middle. You'll know it when you've found it. As far as converting a stock ignition to coilpacks, it's not going to happen. There's too much involved and the system needs it's own brain. So you'd have to go with something like Electomotive. I'm sure there are other companies that offer something similar but they are the best.

Oh and JM, if you're looking for performance suspension and brakes check out Modern Motorsports. They make custom brake kits, coilovers, and hubs (in any pattern you want, even 5lug) for the Z's.

I've heard of Electramotive before and their stuff. But I also get the sense their stuff is pretty expensive too.

Another source of Z car stuff is www.arizonazcar.com. They have mostly high performance suspension and brake stuff.

Electromotive is expensive. Not outrageously so, but it does make MS look like pocket change
