I had the same problem with my 79 NA which I have since dropped an 82 turbo engine into. I figured that it had a fuel efficiency of one gallon per mile! That's right, fourty miles on a tank and making an huge embarrassingly black and stinky cloud behind me as I drove. I tried all kinds of stuff including the fuel pressure regulator. It ended up being the simplest of things. The connectors for the temp sensor(s) at the front of the engine were corroded. These wires that travel to the ECU have connectors under or along the fuel rail beside the first three injectors. (general vicinity) Pull the connectors apart and clean them there and prhaps where they connect to the sensors them selves. There are two or three sensors up there. Chances are if one connector is dirty then they all are so clean them all. It solved the problem for me.
Good luck,
