no oil pressure and awful noise!

83 zx just got it running again, 103 k on a n/a engine. no smoke, leaks or anything, but the oil pressure gauge has a little red light on and the gauge reads 0lbs. I thought nothing of it until what sounded like a squeeky belt got to sound like metal rubbing on metal from the back of the engine... Wtf! any ideas? would the engine even run without oil pressure? dip stick says the level is fine and oil is clean... on my z31 when oil level is low the lifters tap a little, would this not happen on the inline 6 too?

The 280zx oil pressure sensor is known to give incorrect oil pressure readings, but a metal sounding squeal isn't good... open the oil fill cap & see if the cam has any oil on it. You can also take off the valve cover & inspect...

The lifters are manually adjusted on an L28 So no not really.

Make sure your guage is properly hooked up and double check the oil again. If it keeps up you might want to look into replacing your oil pump. That or your pick up tube is clogged up. In that case you will have to remove the pan and clean the screen on the bottom of it.

Last I checked there aren't any belts at the back of the engine. Go out & locate where the noise is coming from.

You could have randomly blew out some bearings in a pulley.

I pulled the value cover and saw the lobes on the cam were dry... so no oil pressure either from the new turbo oil pump being out or the sludge stopping up the oil paths.
so how hard to replace the oil pump and how would I go about cleaning the sludge out of the head? other than pulling the head and having it got tanked?

What color is your oil? Do you change your oil at regular intervals?

How about some pics of the head / cam ?

I had a similar issue driving back from MSA 07. I had good oil pressure, but the oil wasn't getting to the cam. After a complete rebuild, I think some RTV got clogged in one of the main oil passages, and as it broke up, moved to all the smaller oil passages. Kinda like a "car heart attack".

oil is a light clean brown... and I would assume I just picked it up from a buddy who is moving. I am not so sure I want it now! he said the pump is almost brand new and from a turbo. the head does have a lot of sludge in and around it... i am thinkin lots of carb cleaner lol...

Bad idea, very bad idea, unless you wanna pull the pan. As that junk will clog up the oil screen very fast.
