Oil Change Tranny/Diff

Gents,

Since I just bought my Z!!!!

I don't know if any of the liquids have been done so I am going to guess they haven't! I'm going to change out the manual tranny fluid, and the rear end fluid, I see how to get the fluid out! But how do I get it back in!!

Also, I found the tranny oil, but what do I use for the rear end oil?

Thanks,
wgcthree

the fill plug on the Nissan 5 speed is on the drivers side of the trans just aft of the bell housing. The T5 fill plug is just above the drain plug on the passenger side of the trans. DONT remove the fitting on the drivers side. Its NOT the fill plug and is not a good idea to remove

On gear oil 75W up to 90W should be good.

That's strange, my fill plug on my 5-speed, is on the passenger side. Does that mean I have a T-5? I don't know about the rear end though. Never messed with it yet. And I used Valvoline 80-90 in my tranny.

thats an understatement! If you remove the T5 driver's side fitting... just take the tranny to a transmission shop for reassembly. Bring your credit card

In answer to the how you get oil back in, if you mean "how do i pour into that hole when there's no roomto tip the bottles", the answer is you don't. Get a pump gun (like $10 or so at an auto parts store), or borrow one from a friend. It looks like a small household tire pump, but has two hoses. Slide under the car with the pump and the oil bottles, put the suction hose into the first bottle, the outlet hose in the tranny or diff fill ports, and in a few strokes the whole bottle is transferred. Do that til the oil starts to come out the fill plug hole (that's the full mark). Easy as pie. Keep the pump gun in a plastic bag in your garage (no oil spillage that way) for next time.
For what oil, I use Amsoil's full synthetic straight 90 weight (called Series 2k or some marketing name like that). Royal Purple is popular, too.
good luck,
Dave

Easiest thing to do i pay jiffy lube the 30 bucks per unit and don't even get your hands dirty.

With enough money you can have everything maintained on your Z without getting your hands dirty... but is it really your Z anymore or just another car that you have a mechanic fix all the time.

I dont know, but Nissan may have used different cases through the production run. But 82-83 Nissan 5 speeds should have the drain plug on the drivers side of the tranny. All's that should be on the passenger side are the switches. Up to four of them. If you dont have four switches then it's possible that one just has a plug in it's place. I cant speak for the pre '82 transmissions though. I dont know if the casings were the same or not.
