rebuild of 82 280zx l28na proformance

the main bearing spun on my engine so i know i have to do a rebuild. but since it has to go into a machine shop, i was wondering, what kind of things i could do to upgrade some torque and horsepower. like boring out and how much should i do. and up grade the cam? i have never done a rebuild on this kind of engine before but i am ready and excited. i am taking pictures and pulling the engine out now. so basicly what kind of stuff can i do to make it better?

It depends on how much money you have to spend and what your hp goal is. Post those & we'll go from there.

You'll never get as much power from an n/a as a turbo. You can spend $1k and have ~170whp on an L28, or 210whp+ w/ an L28ET. The L28ET is a torquey monster too.

if you have the NA motor rebuilt, you would want to put in lower compression pistons. might as well just get a turbo motor. easiest way to go, and usually the most cost effective.

$1,000...Nitrous baby....have the switch mounted under the gas pedal so it only kicks in under full throttle, this way you can drive and have good gas mileage and then POWER when you need it. Just have them put some forged pistons in it with good rings.

Hum... $700 for forged pistons + $200 machine work = 150hp motor that can take 10 second 100 shots of nitrous now and then... that's a great equation.

Other than the fuel starvation it sounds like a good idea to me.

I guess you could add secondary fuel injectors to compensate right....he did say $10,000 is his limit right?

$900 for the option of 100 shots of nitrous, until the bottle is empty... then you get to refill it. I'd rather spend $900 and have the power available ALL the time... but I guess I'm too picky.

Fuel starvation should only be a problem if you used an old school style dry system. Wet system adds the needed fuel with the nitrous when set up properly and is actually fairly safe on most engines. I'd still go with a running turbo donor car instead if one could be found for $1000 or less, and just do a complete swap, engine, trans, and rear diff.

Ok, in reality though you don't "need" the power "all" the time right...so why destroy the fuel economy? You can have a stronger bottom end, 25-29mpg and 250hp when you need it. I don't know about you but that sounds pretty good to me. Sure it cost a bit but if you are not using the nitrous "all" the time it should last...self control man. I am just talking practicality man...I think N2O could be the way to go in an L28 engine. I am not trying to say it is for everyone but it isn't a bad option when you give it at least some thought. How many of you are driving around in second gear with the gas pedal floored constantly with 12psi pumping through the engine...nobody, you kick it in when you need it.

It would be a pain here where I live unless I could find a local medical supply place to fill the bottles. The nearest speed shop to me is right around 125-150 miles away. I'll stick with mechanical boost lol.

Going by your own "self control" idea... you should already know that if you don't full throttle the turbo, you'd be getting that same (or close to same) fuel econ. And I thought you liked turbos:
