If you want the best value for your money pick cost effective performance parts. I did a few posts on the "best" bang for your buck bits for a budget build (ITM hypereutectic pistons, ARP head and rod bolts, ITM gasket set, etc, etc).

White smoke means it's burning coolant (blown head gasket).
Blue smoke means it's burning oil (worn rings, or valve seals).
Black smoke means it's running rich.
A proper diagnosis can save you thousands of $$$.

I'll one up nismo since a blown headgasket won't automatically equate to a loss in compression.
Check to see if you've lost coolant, with the engine warm put a coolant system pressure checker and pump it up and see if the pressure decreases and if that doesn't show anything connect it and run the engine and watch for a huge spike or decrease in pressure when the engine is revved up.
