sputters and backfires at 3000 rpm

Ok here's my problem:
I took the car down to home depot and noticed it was kinda surging and sputtering really bad intermittently. I paid it no mind and got back home and parked it. Today I got in the car for a quick drive, and noticed the problem was back. I checked the timing and it was 20 degrees. The fuel pressure was steady at 38 psi while at idle. I have no idea what is going on. It surges and back fires really bad from about 2500-3500 rpm. I can hear the turbo spooling really really loud but the car is not really moving anywhere. If i floor it, and get past that rpm point, it clears up sometimes.
I am so lost please help!

couple things, one you could have a bad vacumme leak cause the turbo to spool more and have more sound, the other possibility is the AFM is bad or has a bad connection

they dont always make that much noise... but yea the vac leak will cause a louder turbo spool but not the sputtering like that unless its massive

This is the day of epic nissan fail

Well I know its getting late, but I think I made some progress. I see that there is a vacuum line broken off at the nipple on the evap canister on the passenger side by where the engine bay light is. After fooling with the car, I hop into my 200sx(s12) to go get some bbq ribs. It cranks and drives fine, and after leaving the restaurant, it wont crank. Just spins over. Oddly, a passerby stopped and said to push start it, and I say whatever since the starter is working, but get this, after a push start, it runs; only to about 3500 rpm. So after limping home, My wife tells me her grandad's pathfinder just crapped itself. On a side note, the pathy has 330,000 miles with only oil changes, a t-belt, and a starter ever done to it. Sorry for the long rant, but its just crazy that all these old lemons failed at the same time

is the whole engine cranking or just the starter spinning? cause its possible the gear went out or the mechanism that kicks the starter gear out died. idk, sound lame. where are you from? out of curiosity?

on the s12 the engine is cranking over Im getting fuel, it just wont crank on its own. Im from Mobile, Alabama. It has the ca18et engine in it.
The main thing is I got my Z running right again. I fixed that nipple on the evap canister, and looks like my no 6 injector plug worked itself loose, but after those fixes its running back to normal.

yeah thanks snwbrder for the help. I get so used to saying s12 b/c if I say just 200sx, everyone thinks the newer front wheel drive one (b14).
niku-sama, that is the original motor that came with the car, and I am also thinking it is the maf since it wont rev past 3500 rpm. I dont know, I have been really thinking about selling this junk and really focus on the 280 since it is my favorite car.

Yeah those are nice. I like just about anything with a vg in though There is a white one around here with the v6 in it and it looks showroom. I was really hooked on the styling of the car especially up front. The squared off nose is so hot to me.

the driver seat is a z31 seat. Those cars came with so many different seat setups, but this one is a manual type with the adjustable side bolsters.
