Timing
The timing can be changed by the position the cam gear is set at, right? This changes the position of the timing chain and the cam timing, correct? So my question is, How do I know where to set the cam gear? I have an aftermarket cam so this will effect the timing.

The cam should be the same prety much. #1 cyl TDC #1 int. lobe TDC. I am close to posotiv on this. the key on the crank should line up with the notch on the cam.

Here is my setup and cam specs:
-N47 Head *Port and polish / valve job*
-Schneider Race Cam (MSA Stage III)
-Flattop Pistons (9.8:1 Compression)
-Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch
-CAI
-3 into 2 Headers
-2.5" Pipes
-High Flow Cat
-Dynomax Ultra Flo Muffler
Cam: Lift(In/Ex): .460/.460. Duration(In/Ex): 270/280
Any suggestions? Is this the type of thing where I can just adjust it by ear or should I use my timing light?

I'd start at -10* TDC (someone correct me if I'm wrong, please!!). See how it runs, take it for a good spin around the block. Make sure that your RPM's are staying around 900-ish at idle and that the idle is strong..not racing...a good strong idle.
That's what I'd do, but opinions differ.

just pop your hood, and loosen the bolt on your distributor, and turn it slowly back and forth and hit the throtle linkage between each move, and leav it were it soots you. you might end up turning it and leaving it to your left if you like fast take off, but that is advanced I think.
