Timing chain/sprocket alignment question
Hey guys, I haven't posted much here but I'd really appreciate your help. I am in the middle of rebuilding my engine in a 79 280zx due to a blown head gasket. I am a the point where I need to put the timing chain back together and here is my hick-up. I have my number 1 piston at TDC, but I am not sure where my cam sprocket dowel should be positioned. I can insert the sprocket onto the camshaft and have the number 2 mark line up with the groove, but I can't do the same for the number 1 mark do to the position of the dowel coming out of the camshaft. So I guess my question is when the number one cylinder is at TDC, where does my camshaft need to be rotated to relative to the dowel pin? or is there another way to line it up? Thank you for your help.
P.S. I had painted on a line so that I wouldn't have this problem, but the machine shop wiped it off of the oblong camshaft plate with the groove in it and off of the camshaft itself.

Thanks a bunch, I looked around a bit but didn't find that second link. It shows the cam lobe position which is exactly what I was looking for. I have a chilton's manual and never found that diagram anywhere. Again I appreciate the help!
