Turbo Factory Vs Turbo Aftermarket
I found a datsun 280ZX purported to be a factory Turbo model in Brisbane in a card yard.
I suspect it is not factory turbo but I may be wrong.
I suspect the car is not factory original.
What do you think?
I didnt think they brought turbos to Australia and none before 1981 at least?
Details below.
Engine Number is L28-487576
Model designation is 280Z T bar roof. 5 speed manual.
Tappet cover does not have a embossed Turbo on it.
Turbo Pipe has embossed " HKS Turbo"
The vehicle is plated 5/80 and is showing 145,000 Klms on the odometer (can't guarantee that is original,).
VIN Number is HGS130 165902.
Apparently Turbo was fitted by a Nissan dealer.
Are there any/many differences between Factory and after market turbos? Any traps for young players? the car is reduced to $3000 it is a Mark 1.

If you suspect that your country did not get the factory turbo Z, then you may be right. 5/80 is a little too early for the 1981 280ZX turbo. In fact, I think they were produced part way through 1981, probably mostly preorders.
Some other distinctions are the distributor; the Nissan turbo Z has a much larger diameter distributor cap and a larger diameter Air Flow Meter. You can compare these to your own cars as I see you already have some 280zx's.
HKS is aftermarket. I think the brand of turbo Nissan used is Garrett(?) ...or is that the style of turbo. I haven't owned a turbo Z yet.

I think it is an aftermarket bolt on, the stock on is like Bleach said a Garrett turbo. If you look at my cardomain page on page 7, you'll see the stock turbo. Another thing to add is that the turbo models of the 280ZX had a different front grill from the naturally aspirated models.

Factory Turbo?
Hi, SteveGee
Zcar garage has info on L28ET engines all the dates
and numbers on the blocks and heads.
http://www.geocities.com/zgarage.2001/engine.html
Although Australia did not get the L28ET 280 ZX for sale
there are imports around.
Patrol had an L28ET and I am told some Skyline have them.
Hope it helps mate! sounds like a good price
If it was in Adelaide I'd be interested.
