Vaccuum & the F.I.C.D
G'day,
I'm wondering what the FICD is and how it works etc. The Datsun S130 manual is not all that clear about it.
I think mine is faulty. I get vaccuum from the other vac pipe but none from the FICD to the AC. I have checked the pipe and can blow through it ok.
When my car idles when warm it idles at about 1500rpm, cold is about 900rmp. I do not have any vaccuum control of the AC/blower doors or vaccuum out of the centre pipe under the bonnet that leads into the cabin.
Does the above sound like a faulty FICD? Can it be fixed, bought new, or do I have to go second hand for an item that may not work? How do I remove? Just a spanner or is there more to it?
If you need me to elaborate further I will try
Thanks in advance
Pete

The FICD adjusts the proper idle speed when the air conditioning unit is turned on, and is controlled by the ECU. If your engine stalls when you turn on your AC, then it is likely that the FICD needs to be replaced.
However, from what you've described, it appears that you're having low idle problems when the engine is cold, and dissipates after the car has been warmed-up -- but not in relation to whether the air conditioning unit is on or off. Sorry, is that correct, or did I just misunderstand? If it has nothing to do with the AC unit, please let me know, so that I'm not confused as to the problem you're having. Thanks.

Vaccuum & the F.I.C.D
Z Babe,
I have no climate control at all. There is no vaccuum into the cabin. The hose is fine.
Let me try and describe what I have found in more detail.
There is a black cylinder under the bonnet near the carbon canister. There are 3 vaccuum tubes coming off it and what look like two electric or magnetic switches.
2 vaccuum lines come off the engine (intake manifold?) and one leads into the cabin to the aircon controls.
There is no vaccuum suction out of the F.I.C.D. (little dome with a vaccuum lead coming out?) There is vaccuum out of the other engine tube, but nothing out of or to the tube heading to the cabin.
I have no climate control other than temperature (makes defogging the windscreen painfull).
She revs low while cold and high when hot.
The aircon does not work. It does not engage.
I hope I have described this a little better.
Cheers,
Pete

was wondering what year Z you working on? I had similar prob on my turbo and the vaccum pump. I ran straight vaccum to my Heat/ A/C controll and added a oneway check valve so not to loose vaccum when boost kicks in. You need to make sure you have vaccum going in and check all hoses for splits or cracks.

Vaccuum & the F.I.C.D
Yo Jimmy,
It's an 82na.
Will try running a t-piece off the vacc that works and see what happens.
Will need to see about replacing the FICD if it needs it too.
On another note, I have a large petrol smell when the engine is switched off.
The most likely culprit for this would be the carbon canister?
What is involved with replacing/fixing this? Are the parts easy to come by?
Cheers,
Pete

Vaccum lines
Yo, if you run straight vaccum you will need a check valve because when you step on gas hard you loose vaccum. As far as the vaccum can, I know it has a filter on bottom and charcol inside and I think all you can replace is the filter. If the can is full of gas you will need replacement. The can its self is easy to remove, just be sure thats where your gas smell is coming from. I have seen injector lines leak, fuel pressure regulaters and or even the fuel lines. Really take a good look at them all,it does not take but a couple of drops of fuel to smell it........Sounds like you may have a vaccum leak as well, check them all for splits in the hose and those 2 vaccum switches I believe there are lines on the bottom of those 2 vaccum cans also.Good luck and happy hunting............
