Probably a stupid question, but I need to know.
How are you supposed to check and/or set the timing on an 82 ZX Turbo motor. The Haynes manual simply says "Consult Dealer". Strange that it would only say that for the 82 Turbo. Anyone have any ideas?
Now the reason for asking. I recently bought the car from a guy in Florida. Brought it to Georgia, had emissions checked and it failed. Turns out, there was NO Catalytic converter. Had to have one installed and now the engine runs like crap. No accelleration, seems like the turbo won't kick in. Car ran fine before, like a scalded dog. I'd like to get it running right so I can pass the emissions test and put a license plate on the damn thing. It's driving me nuts.
By the way, a special thanks to the State of Florida for dropping the first 2 digits of the VIN in their computer on 81 & 82 model year vehicles. Seems their computer was only capable of handling 15 of 17 digits. First 2 digits represnet Country of Origin. Everyone except the State of Georgia knows that Nissan/Datsuns are from Japan, but they make you jump through hoops to get it straightened out. What a pain, and now the emissions thing.
Sorry for venting, but thanks. Now anyone have any ideas about the orginial question about timing?

The crank pulley has notches...In my '81 I can't seem to find the numbers to match the notches. But the crank pulley has the notches and you'll need a timing light to see that in action. I'm guessing the numbers are on the engine itself. At least yours is easy to set...just turn the distributor. Mine has a crank angle sensor next to the crank pulley. Good luck.

Hehe, been there done that. I think I have the same Haynes manual....doh. My factory manual doesn't say how to set it either. It does list specs of 24 degrees +/- 3 degrees at 700 RPM for manual trans and 600 for auto. This seems pretty high to me but I guess the computer is capable of retarding it. Just make sure your car is warmed up and idle speed is correct. I unplugged my throttle switch according to info that I found on Alldata also. The pointers are in 5 degree increments starting with -5 at the top. I always mark the crank and the pointer first with white out so its easier to tell where I need it to be.
Have fun.
