Also make sure you dont use to thick of an oil in the winter. I see you live in Canada, I would recommend 5w-30 in the winter if you get below freezing. And I use 20w-50 in the summers when it is over 85 degrees. Otherwise I use 10w-40. I have heard synthetics can be very good for your car but I havent been able to aford to switch. I also recommend Castrol GTX. I have found it shows th least amount of wear when I change it. But what ever you do change your oil every 3000 miles no matter what. If you dont drive your car in the winter. Be sure to change the oil before you drive it in the spring. This your motor will love you for.

oil
I'd go with the mobil 1 that is if you are looking at the numbers alone. I did a search on Ams Oil and they have independant studies on their oil as well as everyone else in the many different Weights. but yeah go sythetic if all else fails.

Changing Oil
You could do what I do and not change your oil at all.....
I leak/burn about a litre a week so I've always got clean oil.
Just change the filter every 10k or so
saving up to get the engine and gearbox replaced so I will need to change the oil in the future though.
Cheers,
Pete

oils
I've been a mechanic for many years now and recently had a B&G rep come and talk to our group. He had a printout of different oils and there properties. Mobil1 was at the top, with Castrol at the bottom. Wal-Mart uses a better oil in their shops than anything Castrol has to offer. Something about them not wanting lawsuits or something. So if you want to use synthetic, which I use in my vehicles and strongly encourage, use Mobil1. I've looked at every comparison I could and that is the best. Please don't use Castrol or Pennslime.

15W/50 Mobil 1 syn is what I've been using in California. Well worth the extra $. Tests have shown that it's the best. Depending on how cold it is where you live, you may want to use 10/40 or 5/30. Most high end auto manufacturers (Porsche/Jag/Audi, etc) recommend Mobil 1.

I heard that if you use synthetics in old motors the old oil residue causes issues with it. Is this true? I have been waiting to rebuild my motor before changing to synthetics. Let me knwo which is true. I would definatly pay the extra money to extend the life of my engines.

What's wrong with Pennzoil?
I've remained well-informed in the industry and there are institutes that ensure quality. As long as the oil is API certifired to it's most reent standard, you should be in good shape. People think castrol and pennzoil are junk because they don't conatin as many detergents as other brands. Who knows? Maybe the other companies use the detergents in excess, and too much may be a bad thing. Who is to decide?
All the oils carry the exact same certification, so they can't be too much different.
At least there is my 2 cents,
Brian

I've heard many say that Pennzoil isn't very good, but I've read articles that say it's fine. Same thing for Castrol. I've just heard and read that Mobil 1 is above the rest. You'd probably fine running just about anything (Mobil 1, Valvoline, Castrol, Pennzoil, Havoline, Quaker State). Just don't trust the off-brand names, such as Chevron Supreme oil.

Oil is a preference. I ran Penzoil inmy 79 Prelude for 386k miles. never had an issue. I ran Penzoil 1 time in my Trans -Am and had nothing but problems with pressure. I use either Qauker State or Mobile in my Current vehicles. My Z has 382k, Civic has 185k, and My Avalanche is new. Those are my tests. I dont read all that crap they put out cause it is bias as to who is paying for it. This is actual comparison on real vehicles, (57 to be exact). I have found that Z,s and Hondas I have owned prefer the Mobile and Quaker State. All my Fords were crap and didnt matter what I ran they never made it past 50k. All my GM products prefer the Mobile and Quaker state products but did not show any serious problems with Penzoil.
So I use Quaker State mainly cause it works good and I sponsor my NASCAR driver.
Can anyone tell me for sure that switching to a synthetic from regular oil after 380k of driving is not going to hurt my engine. I have heard that you need to use regular oil for the first 10k of a new motor to set the rngs adn stuff. but that you should not switch if you ahve a lot of miles on your engine. it could cause damage to you rings. Something about the old oil and synthetics not mixing.

I switched to synthetic at 100,000 without any problems. I'm at 150,000 now. The little bit of oil left in your system won't cause a problem when you add the synthetic. Some have said that is you change to synthetic that the new oil can penetrate the seals and cause oil leaks. This has been proven to be an old wives tale. I'd feel comfortable switching to syn.
