What type of oil?

I need to change the oil in my 280zx turbo fairly soon. I wanted to know which oil would be best? Im thinking about switching to synthetic. Is this a good idea?

oil

I use castrol gtx 10w-40 in my 83 turbo, oil is more matter of perferance than anyting else. Main thing is to change oil and filter when required and stick to it........

hey fellow canuk yeah man you dont want a heavy oil here...
5w30 will do fine...my brothers friend just put like 20w50 and thats a big mistake specialy when it gets to -35C every day here and winters coming we make fun of him and tell him hes cylinders are gonna mush around in jello :P
syntetic blend is a good choice for oil...i usualy get the castrol too or formula 1 i think its called here...

On my last oil change I put in 5w30, but I live in Victoria BC. It rarely goes below freezing here. I think I might switch to 10w30, synthetic...Ive heard Redline and castrol syntek are really good.

Mobil 1!! Costs a little more but worth every penny! Synthetics do wonders for these older engines. Go with a lightweight Mobil 1 until warmer weather.

15W/50 Mobil 1 syn is what I've been using in California. Well worth the extra $. Tests have shown that it's the best. Depending on how cold it is where you live, you may want to use 10/40 or 5/30. Most high end auto manufacturers (Porsche/Jag/Audi, etc) recommend Mobil 1.

What's wrong with Pennzoil?

I've remained well-informed in the industry and there are institutes that ensure quality. As long as the oil is API certifired to it's most reent standard, you should be in good shape. People think castrol and pennzoil are junk because they don't conatin as many detergents as other brands. Who knows? Maybe the other companies use the detergents in excess, and too much may be a bad thing. Who is to decide?

All the oils carry the exact same certification, so they can't be too much different.

At least there is my 2 cents,
Brian

I've heard many say that Pennzoil isn't very good, but I've read articles that say it's fine. Same thing for Castrol. I've just heard and read that Mobil 1 is above the rest. You'd probably fine running just about anything (Mobil 1, Valvoline, Castrol, Pennzoil, Havoline, Quaker State). Just don't trust the off-brand names, such as Chevron Supreme oil.

I switched to synthetic at 100,000 without any problems. I'm at 150,000 now. The little bit of oil left in your system won't cause a problem when you add the synthetic. Some have said that is you change to synthetic that the new oil can penetrate the seals and cause oil leaks. This has been proven to be an old wives tale. I'd feel comfortable switching to syn.

FWIW, when I switched to synthetic in my old motorcycle it did leak a little for a while where it hadn't before... it stopped after about 5k miles. It was never enough to be worried about though.

If you can find it, get Royal Purple. It's synthetic, it's expensive, but well worth it.
