what's the real HP?
i have been reading on lotsa ppl's websites that Datsun never told the real HP rating. supposedly the CRANK hp was measured at 135-145hp for us ZXers. but there is a story about NET & GROSS, so the SAE "gross" rating was closer to 170-180hp. thus making WHEEL hp the 135-145hp rating.
i am real confused becuz my ZX did 16.5s@85mph on the 1/4m track, & my 2000 Honda Accord, AUTOmatic 150 crank hp, weighing 3400lbs, does it in 17.1s@82mph.
what is the "REAL" crank hp rated at for our L28E & the L28ET?

Figure on 15-20% drivetrain loss for these cars, although I have never seen solid figures. For the ZXT stock cars have pulled between 165-180 RW from the few numbers I've seen.

SteveZX, your 1/4 sounds about right to me, the Accord would be slower IMO because of several things: the lack of torque that Hondas are notorious for, FF setup, and a much higher power to weight ratio than your ZX. I think the rwhp is about 115-125 hp on n/a ZX's or at least that's what I've seen from those on zcar, and from some people I've talked to at Datsun shows. My ZXT dynoed in at 146 hp at the wheels, but it was kinda sick when I got it strapped on the dyno.

I dynoed my 280ZX at 135hp 168 lbs. It was also running bad which I figured out soon after and it didn't pass emissions. Now that its fixed I'm sure it could easily dyno for another 10hp or more bringing it to the 145 RWHP rating.
I think a lot of Z owners think their car is fast, but they run them out of tune or with slacked timing chains ect and don't realize they have even more power hidden in a proper tune-up. (just like me)
Since the dyno I replaced the oxygen sensor and the fuel pressure regulator (that was the problem, way too much fuel) and have done some changes to timing. All this has made a huge difference in performance. Both torque and horsepower. (and gas milage)
I guess what I'm saying is a brand new L28 in perfect tune should be able to dyno 145 hp at the rear wheels. 81-83 280ZX.

ok, i'm cleared up now, THX guys. just seems confusing becuz mileage is really great considering the technology, 31mpg hiway & yet it makes so much HP at the wheels (i'm avging 21 city now). considering GM's 305 V8 carbed only makes 155 crank HP at the time & got 20mpg hiway (comparing to my '85 Grand Prix)
