Where do I start.......
Okay, I am a DSMer. But recently a friend of mine ran into about 6k to rebuild his turbo 280zx. We are planning on a street machine that can pull some very respectible #'s at the strip. Just to let you know i have spent 6 hours on the net searching before i decided to plauge you guys with these questions. So here I go....
1. What kind of pistons and rods do you reccomend. I am having a hard time trying to find out the stock compresstion ratio let alone any aftermarket pistons for this block.
2. I found some cams but they are telling me that I need to beef up the valve train, yet nobody seems to offer a beefed up valvetrain. Where do i find this?
3. Where do you guys reccomend intercooler placement and what kind of intercoolers do you reccomend. I was thinking about taking the starion intercooler that i have laying about and redoing the tanks to make it work as a front mount. But is it going to be large enough??
4. How much boost is factory boost on an 82 280zx? How much too much??
5. The injection system looks like an accident looking for a place to happen. Does anyone make a manifold that uses maybee a bosch style injector?? If not then what is standard cc's for these stockers and who makes an upgrade?? Also what do you guys use to set your ecu's up for larger injectors??
6. What kind of a turbo is an upgrade. I see that these cars run a Garrett .63 a/r turbo. Is this basically the same as a Z31's turbo. (because i just got through with one of those)
7. Also I found a company that makes a L28 Big Bore Kit. Says it takes the block to 3.1. Is anyone running this setup and is it good to use this on a turbo motor??
Any input will be GREATLY appreciated, thanks for the time and space,
Poor

From the sounds of it, you aren't looking for a super high horsepower car. If you don't know how much boost you want to run, you never stated a target 1/4 mile time or horsepower goal. If you want to run a stock Starion intercooler, then you're looking at less than 300hp and a 12 second car or higher.
1. Use stock pistons, rods, crank. In good shape, the factory block is good for a reliable 350hp.
2. You don't need to "beef up" the stock valvetrain. You can get a mild cam upgrade for the turbo cars from Motorsport auto. But don't waste you money on a cam for a 300hp car. 600hp, and yes u should buy their cam. (http://www.zcarparts.com)
3. Front mount intercoolers are best. Right down in front of the radiator. A small aftermarket intercooler is better than any factory equipment intercooler you can pull from a junk yard. Don't go oversize on the cooler or the intake pipes. It'll take away some of the efficency of the turbo. Research what the proper size piping and cooler is for your compressor size and boost goals.
4. Factory boost is about 7 to 7.5 psi. Lots of people run 12-20 psi. The higher the boost, the more expensive the engine management gagets get.
5. Those are Bosch injectors... ? But there are other fuel rails. no aftermarket manifolds. This is an old car. You can make a manifold if you really want to. Mercedes injectors are sometimes used. I forgot the flow of the stock turbo injectors. 270cc?
6. T3/4 Hybrid is the very common turbo to use. It bolts to the stock exhaust manifold and is good for over 300hp.
7. Boring is ok for the turbo. You don't want their kit though. Don't stroke a turbo. Its harder on the connecting rods and a wasted effort. Go for more boost, not more displacement.

Bleach pretty much covered everything. A few things to add:
1. Stock CR is 7.4:1.
3. Don't use the Starion i/c, a few people have used it on other forums and said the pressure drop is too much. Invest in an NPR intercooler, or a Spearco.
4. As Bleach said, you crank it up, but make sure you don't ping as one ping as the stock headgasket becomes pretty fragile above 15 psi (or so I've heard, a few people are running 18+ with no problem though)
5. You can use the 35lb injectors (370cc) injectors from an SVO Mustang, Ford Turbo Coupe (Thunderbird) as a higher flowing injector. You'd just have to adjust the AFM to lean out the mixture a little. However, if you plan to run 420 cc, you need to get a remapped ECU from Jim Wolf Technology or go stand alone.
