120mph Gauge Cluster

130mph Gauge Cluster
I got a 130mph gauge cluster out of a 1979zx 2+2 that looks to be in great shape. Will the 1979 cluster plug right into my 1983zx wire harness? In getting it out at the junkyard I had to basically peel back the top of the dash to shoe horn it out. Are there any tricks to getting these in and out? I imagine I will have to remove the steering wheel.

And it should fit, the only thing you'd have to worry about getting the harness for is if you were going from a digidash to analog, or vice versa.

Yuppers... Remove the steering wheel and it's easy to get out. The 130 speedo plops right in place of your 85, but if you want to keep your cruise control, you need to swap speed sensors & maintain using the 85mph sensor. I've posted pics & info of that on a thread here on ZDriver.

The cluster I pulled out of the 79 looks like this first picture with just the two plugs (one round, one Rectangle) for the stock wiring harnesses to plug into. But all of the ones I have seen for an 83 have the yellow pigtail like the second picture. What is the difference?

On my 85mph cluster it has a rod butten by the tacometer theat says "Check", I figured it is to see what your highest rpm was after a run but doesnt seem to work. The 130mph cluster does not have this rod. It has the hole for the rod but just a rubber plug in the hole blocking it off. Is there a way to get this to work or even switch it over to my 130mph tach?

^ The check light, tells you about the different sensors in your car. (brake fluid level, water level, tail lights status, and your washer fluid level) Pretty handy, I loved it in my T-top. But for some reason, I can't get it to work in my slicktop. Probably a wiring issue. And I will swap the harness in it later, with a better one.

Nice, Thanks Wildman. Is it posssible to keep the check option with the 130mph cluster?

I do know that it is very important. Because without it plugged in. Nothing much really works in the cluster. I just always made sure everything was plugged in. Probably could find out by looking up the wires in the schematics.
