i swear i posted this b4 but anyhow (you get that when you are a newb in new forums) i am interested in datsuns (the Z's) and i live in Aus and as many ppl know there arn't that many Datsun Z's here (well at least not in darwin, NT) anyhow i say this add in the Trading post (in msg below) and so i found a forum and asked around and was told to ask some ppl here about it so here is what i posted in the other forum...

i have al ways been a fan of 240-280 z's and zx's and i live in darwin (australia) and i see a few (2 in the past 5 year actually) around and supprisingly i saw a 280zx t-top in the trading post just the other day and gave em a ring

just buy chance could it be possable that the computer is not broken and that it could be the wiring (from the sellers position how would they know its broken or not just the wiring???) like would they need to test it in another datsun??? to find weather its working or not???. would like to know because i am just gesing here but i think i might be paying up $800 for a new comp and only if it passes my dads expectations (will be 1st car HOPEFULLY)and if its just the wire and the seller don't know i would enjoy it (it sounds crewl) but also that the car is not being used at present or for at least a while anyhows and dad still want's to bring the price down (because we can't actually hear it run untill the we fix/get a new comp which would be a rather big gamble if something else is rooted

ohh i am a new member but considering from the add it sounds like it will be alot of work (IF i get it) and i will definately need some help since you all seem to know your **** THX would really love a reply by tomorrow plz

ohh yeah and some other stuff! is ther any way to find ANYTHING out at all about the condition of the engine (without the computer) WOULD BE EXTREEMLY helpfull

and also how much is a new comp and/or is anyone here (in Aus preferably selling one???)

All agreed with Russ. I would also add that testing the ECU is pretty easy *if* you have a service manual and a multimeter. With two people, you can test that and some of the wiring from under the dash in about 15 minutes. Sorry, I only have the 280Z service manual, or I'd give you the instructions on the testing. Not sure if the Haynes/Chilton manuals have those tests.

there are a lot of us australians in this board, I think you might be the first Northern territorian though. From what it sounds like from the others its not worth $1000, so try to bargain it down a bit. Also look out for rust under the car (aside form the floorpans) i.e frame rails, and other rust, as this can be used as a bargaining tool.

A computer could be had fairly cheaper from a wreckers (cheaper than new), but it sounds like you will have to get someone from another state to help you, as it looks like Z's are fairly uncommon there, but from my experience everyone is very helpful here, and you should be able to find help pretty easily.

Unfortunately I don't know that much about the elcetronic ignition Z's so I can't be much help with the problem, but good luck anyway

thanks for all the info (how much would the new expensive things be likely to cost??? (eg: computer???) (not sure if there would be one in the dump, are they all compatable?? like put a 260z in a 280zx???)

dad (coz i am 15) is worried about the car bcos we can't hear is start or give it a run and i think that is something to be worried about too. and he also wants to get the price down bcoz we don't know what else is busted in it (thankx for all the info guys (gonna print it out and give i to my dad see what he thinks of it all
he still not keen about it but i will tell us what to look for when we see it

 

A really easy solution is to get carbs from an earlier Z (prefferably an early 240) and put these on instead of the F.I. A new computer could be in excess of $AUD1000. I'd definitely be worried about not being able to hear it, but the carbs is a easy solution
