280ZXT Breather Hose Useless?

I can't remember from when I pulled the valve cover off of my L28ET, but if I'm not mistaken, isn't that breather hose that runs from the boot between the AFM and Turbo to the valve cover basically useless? I don't remember a hole actually going through to the inside of the valve cover. I'm thinking I'm going to do what most have done and put one of those catch canisters on there, and use that space in the boot for my recirculating bypass valve.

I was looking on the JWT site and saw they were selling that Bosch compressor bypass valve for about $60, I got the same one for about $15 through RockAuto by buying the part from a SAAB 300 turbo.

It's not "useless" in the eyes of the engineer who designed it. It recycles oil / fuel / crankcase vapors, and obviously allows for the valve cover to breathe. Most people (including myself) yank the tube & install a filter... but a catchcan system would be best.

It serves another important function. That hose, combined with the block hose creats a Vaccume inside the block. Better the Vaccume. The better the ring seal. My new engine will have a vaccume pump plumbed to the block and valve cover. Hooking a filter to the valve cover lets in unmeterd air. That goes from the valve cover, down the timing chain opening. And though the block. Then strait into the intake. I have a filter on mine. But that was before I started studing the vaccume of these engines.

Yeah, not only that, but the vacuum also decreases drag among the moving parts in the engine as well.

Although I didn't think it worked quite the same on the turbo cars? I thought I read it worked differently, but maybe I'm mistaken?

It should still work the same because the point where the hose connects to the intake is before the turbo, meaning that it's still a vacuum drawing air out of the crankcase.

Steve is right. That vacuum improves the efficiency of every moving part inside the engine and it works exactly the same on the turbo cars as it does on the NA cars.

vaccum gud!
vacume must be how they say it in jolly ole england.
i would keep the hose hooked up to the intake its not really doing any bad the way it is, i just say that though because when i take my oil cap off the car runs rougher, not horrible. i would imagine a similar thing would happen if you took the hose off and replaced it with a breather.

Maybe I should just connect a plumbing T down at the boot where the breather hose connects, and then I can just run my recirculating bypass into that.
