Well
is there a way to check the timing. It could be off. thats the only possibility we have so far.
I put the plug wires on according to this post and the chiltons book. And it doesnt start. there is a one stamped on top of the cap is that the first cylinder?

More!
it cut a grove on the inside of the cap on one side. it broke off two contacts for the plug wires on the inside. but the distributor didnt move the dot on the block and the dot on the distributor housing are still lined up. it doesnt look like it moved at all.

damn it to hell!!!!!!
well how the plug wires were on the dizzy when i got the car it ran good we crashed the cap and rotor put new one on it would start and idle but bog baddly if i try to rev over 1000rpm so i checked in the chilton book my brother said the wires are *** backward and put them on acc to the book and now it wont start at all and i cant but them back because i didnt have them marked. as i cranked it a loud pop came from under the hood and it smelled like electronics so im taking it to a mechanic that i know that has done alot of old datsun and nissan z cars but thats 100 an hour and i already have almost 5000 in the car.

In case you missed my prior post...
EDIT... I even have a Haynes manual scan pre-uploaded (FYI... you should burn that Chilton's and buy a Haynes, or download the FSM).

Wont RUn please help
i have an 83 280zx and it wont run. It is currently in the shop and they cant figure it out either. I have replaced the starter and distributor. The fuel pump works and the fuel filter is new. Cant check the timing because it wont run long enough. When you crank it over, it dies. Any ideas on what it could be? I am out of options and would love to get it fixed ASAP!

A motor needs 3 things to start:
-proper air
-proper fuel
-proper spark
Are the injectors spraying? (you can check by pulling a spark plug to check the tip: wet or dry)
Is it getting spark to each cylinder?
Are the plug wires in the correct order?

The injectors are spraying. each cylinder is getting spark and the plug wires are in correct order.

Let me make sure I understand you...
The car was running fine, you replaced the cap & rotor, didn't secure it tight, rotor chopped into the cap, replaced the cap & rotor, and now it won't start?
There are only so many things that can be wrong... and I still think the plug wires aren't in the correct order.
Or the CAS was damaged / unplugged.
Or the timing is WAY off.

sorry guys
sorry for the funny stuff my wife had been posting according to my bitching fits about the 280zx i had recently got. the pick up and disc in the dizzy under the metal plate was twisted from my cap and rotor crash lol. i installed a new dizzy and nothing the mech at the shop said it was 180 out and turned my dizzy around with the plug at the rear not the front like it was when i got it. and he said my coil was wired backwards he put them on blue and white on the pos and the black on the neg. it ran then put had very bad miss the tach was going crazy. then after about 10 min of idle it died and would not start at all. no fire from the coil we even hot wired the coil to try and make it fire and nothing happened so i got a accel super coil put it in. still wont start the new coil fires now im not getting signal from my new dizzy im thinking the signal amp on the side off the coil mount? anyway how could it run so good when i got it with the dizzy in the other way and the coil wired wrong i dont know who to belive! help if you can. thanks for all the post now that i got to read them......
