are you using good quality proper octane fuel?? try backing the timing off until it doesnt detonate. see how it drives. make sure your spark is of good quality, nice and crisp and blue. not yellow or orange. make sure you fuel pressure is good as well. those are some good starting points.

running 93 octane (fresh) new plugs new wires dizzy and cap and rotor starter optima red top battery and 2 gag batt cables i was told to unplug the tps and set timing to 24 btdc i did this and now it wont rev past 3500rpm im on the verge of selling the car but i love it when its runnig right. i set it to 22 with the tps hooked up and it ran better but detonated on boost its missing slightly all through the rpm range tho.

Do you have the wires connected in the right order?
1-5-3-6-2-4

The front cylinder is #1 And theres usually a #1 mark on the dizzy cap. But it can also be found by the fact the #1 tower is the one pointing to the front of the Z

my dizzy is pointed with the plug on the bottom facing the rear of the car. so my #1 tower on the cap is rear facing also this could be my problem....it faced the front when i got it and ran good. i had a old mech look at it he said it was 180 out i came to get it the next day and he had the dizzy spun around but it was running so i thought nothing of it till i read your post. i will flip it around and see if it runs because the old dizzy was bad when he said it was 180 out now that i have a new one it may not be lol im a *** thx for the help ill keep you posted.

it doesnt really matter which way the dizzy faces. all that really matters is that at tdc the #1 lines up with the rotor position. then from there install all the plug leads in the correct order. its less work that way, then just time it as you normally would.

crazy timing problems!!!!!

i got a 83 turbo 280zx 5-speed i been working on it for a few months now due to a prev problem. anyway i set my timing to like 22 btdc went out killed a set of tires CAN YOU SAY 3RD GEAR DRIFTS LOL. i parked it in the garage last night came out today and......i started her up idles at 500rpm very rich. after checking well everything i got out the timing light had a buddy rev to 800 checked timing it was about 45btdc? how the hell could this happen and why would it die when i retard it by twisting the dizzy (conterclockwise) if i advance it more it runs better but im out of adjustment on the dizzy. could my inertia ring have moved. but most of all how did my timing get retarded and the dizzy be bolted down tight? this is a p.i.m.a please help....

"Revving" turns off the idle switch in the TPS, which can advance the timing... check timing at idle.

I suggest re-checking all sensors & connections (TPS, AFM, CHTS, O2 sensor). Also check for vacuum leaks.

hey nismo everything is good but the timing but every time i set it and drive the next day its way off and my dizzy is tight. could the dizzy quill be broken somehow or damn i dont know it has to be mechanical everything else is working as should. when you crash a rotor into the dizzy cap what could possibly be broken.....that was the start of all my problems.
