Question Advice plz '83 280ZX re lost gas cap keys

The car keys disappeared! I have dups for the all but the gas cap (factory locking gas cap). As silly as this sounds, it has become unbelievably irritating to resolve the problem.

Spoke to too many locksmiths with too many different opinions from a dup can be made to remove the cap, the lock can be picked, the lock has to be drilled, the cap will be damaged to remove.

Without wasting anymore time or money on this, what really can be done on this type of gas cap? Ideal situation is a new key made and save the gas cap.

Same gas cap seen on eBay:
"Datsun 280ZX Locking Gas Cap with Keys, Nissan NEW!" Item number: 260054794037

At least I had a full tank of gas when this happened

I had once lost my gas cap key (which was diff than my door/ignition key). I called AAA and they sent over a locksmith in a van. He not only picked the gas lock open, but he made me a couple of spares right there in his van.

Question So r u saying...

That if the locksmith picks the lock, they can re-key after? It doesn't cause any damage?

Your lock was the original factory one/type, whether the same key or not?

Thanks!

Indeed. Locksmiths can do it... but that might cost a few more dollars than you want to spend. I've managed to unlock a couple gas caps using a paperclip & a flathead screwdriver to turn it.

Drive it to a locksmith & have them look at it. If they quote ya more than that gas cap on ebay, just whack a flathead down in there to break the lock & get that one on ebay.

When I bought my ZX it didnt have the keys for the gascap. A flathead screwdriver and a hammer got that sucker permanently unlocked in no time flat

It didn't cost me anything other than $5 for a couple spare keys. AAA covered the service visit itself. It didn't even take him that long to do it either.
