advice on removing uneccesary emission controls on 1979

Hey, I'm new to the Z world. I've owned a b14 sr20 for a couple years now and i might upgrade to the 1979 280zx, but this is when they started changing a lot of the emission crap on cars so I want to know right off the bat, what, if anything, can be removed to increase engine power? Since it doesnt have to pass emissions anymore, I'm all about getting as much power out of is as i can. However, please dont offer removing pwr steering or AC, I wanna know about emissions stuff that i could take off that makes things either faster and more efficient, or less complicated. ie removing air pump for california smog, removing CAT etc etc... PM if needed

Welcome to ZDriver!

Removing emissions stuff isn't going to "increase engine power". Unless your car is a Cali model w/ smog pump, the only emissions control is the EGR. You can cap it if you wish, but you will not make any difference power-wise... maybe over time you won't "lose" power by gunking the intake w/ carbon.

well i know about removing the egr not doing anything, but someone told me that they added a bunch of limiting stuff that limits the power. not exactly like a speed limiter i dont think, but something like that. Then again, I am completely green when it comes to Z's so I'll check that out. thanks

Ah yes... the kanuter valve... aka "power limiter". Better known as the laws of physics.

Every car has a general "power limit"... otherwise all cars would have 23934970974379873474637347437hp

your funny, but for real, is there anything that limits the power? ie keeping it from its full power like rev limiter or anything like that?

ok good to hear. That one user posted a step by step process for eliminating hoses, but is there like a vaccum diagram somewhere that shows the new arrangement? Just curious, thanks for prompt responses.

The only parts that restrict the motor is the intake for the efi cars. If you measure the intake runners the opening is smaller than the port on the head. If you compare a carb intake to the efi intake you can see the difference. Its a 3 mm difference I think. But you dont have to worry about that intake restriction untill you increase compression, headwork, and Add anything above a stage 1 cam. Best thing to do is run stock components and get it tuned in right. Theres no reason to delete anything, its not the golden fleece of cheap horse power. fixing vacuum leaks, getting the right fuel air mixture will get you farther than dismantling the engine bay. Laws change. keep the car as it is, legendary

I dont really want to delete anything, just rearrange those lines and maybe remove some redundant stuff where you still get the correct mix, just with less (undesired)chaos under the hood. and yea all i will be doing is tuning it with stock hardware, then slowly start upgrading components later on.

I ended up deleting everything emissions from my Z short of the evap canister. Looks much nicer and simpler under the hood thats for sure. Tho would I do it again on another Z? Probably not.

hello I had a 79zx the distributor spark runs seperate from fuel injection so I installed carbs 1st duel dgv felt like a new motor reved further up the tach great mpg then I got hold of triple weber's my mpg went down when she was full throttle but the sound out of tripleweber's was worth it for daily driver I'd suggest new holly 4 barrel,,won't haft to rebuild if used make sure your pulling it off running car, 30yr od fuel injection sucks when it starts acting up.good luck go to arizonazcar.com

+1

I would also recommend against a four barrel carb and go with a two barrel.
