I have a pair of 8" subs in my Z, they are awesome because inside you can definately hear/feel them (i know not as much as the huge ones but still, for their size, impressive) and you can only hear them outside the car if they're turned up alot so it's nice when you don't feel like attracting unwanted attension.

Good luck with your project!

here's a pic of what i did in my old 79 zx that i sold.

i just held the speaker on top of it, penciled around it, and cut inside of the lines. then drilled holes where the speaker needed them.

didn't bother putting the carpet back to make the pic pretty. that was in the middle of that project. :]

the z31 has 2 6x9's in the doors i think, and 6.5s on top of the rear shocks. very cool.
i'll have a couple subs and amp wired up very soon.

Good idea... but it would sound better if the back side of the speaker was sealed, or ported correctly. With that plastic top, the vibrations excape from all directions.

Something Like This

This is not a pic of my car but will do for this idea. This is what I am going to do in my car or at least attempt to do in my car. I want to however flush mount the amps in the openings or if they fit mount them under the lids to the compartments so they are hidden. The enclosure will be under them and will pull double duty as the bottom of the amp rack and the top of the sealed enlcosure for the subs. When finished it will of course look much better then this as this is just an example of what will be done...10's or 8's...I still have not decided but eights will most likely be the choice.

Wow, I'm sure your finished work will be nice thxone. Better post some good pictures once you're done.

I still have a long way to go before I begin to mess around with the sound system of my ZX.

Make sure to leave enough room around the amps soo that they don't overheat

Went to this shop in Va awhile back just to see what they had. Small store, mostly sold stuff for hondas and new "tuner" cars. Anyways, I got to talking with the owner and told him I had a Z and he got really psyched about me having a 280zx. He ran in the back and comes out with this super dusty package (Im like WTF?!) and he puts it on the counter and says $2.00! It was a dash kit for the an aftermarket cd player!! Guy had it for soemthing like 6 years just sitting in the back of his shop collecting dust, he said it was the oldest product they had. hahahahah.
Anwyays, he gave it to me for free.

Well the tape deck is in and the CD changer is hooked up but not mounted yet...will be soon. Who is going to want to steal this head unit? On the plus side it works flawlessly as does the changer.

Right on man, I think that is where I might mount my cd changer. I have one question though. Is it possible to hook up a cd changer to the stock 280zx stereo? That is what I want to do, that way it is out of sight out of mind. I ask you this, because you seem to be an expert on car audio, and or stereos.

You can use the CD changers that transmit through an FM station to the radio. I hear the sound quality suffers slightly, but it's one way to get the CD changer out of site and maintain the stock look.

I've seen that on older 60's cars (mustang in particular) where people wanted maintain the stock classic look. Never heard one in person though so I couldn't attest to the sound quality.

I had one on a newer Grand Am, and although I'm sure to trained ear it may have sounded slightly off, but to me it was just like listening to anything else. I think music over the radio sounds good though.

I've used those transmitters before and they sound a little better than radio quality because even though the signal is weak, it is only a few feet away.

You should be happy with it for going through the stock stereo, besides you're obviously not going for a high powered system if you're using the stock 5w per channel amp.

Well here are some pics of the CD changer instaled in the glove box. I had to modify the glove box for it to fit and I had to remove the AC duct for the right side for it to fit the depth of the changer. Sorry for the crap quality pics...mom took the good camera to Ohio with her for vacation.

Thanks...when you grip the wheel as hard as I do, gloves tend to shred!!! lol

Yeah my mom is going to see her dad for fathers day. She had to put him in a home a while back and out of her and her two brothers she is the only one of his kids that will go see him. My mom, brother and I are from Ohio but have lived here in Fl most of our lives.
