Bad ignition switch

Bad ignition switch
My ignition switch is going bad. When i insert the key and turn the switch, sometimes (more and more often) i get a spongy feeling and there seems like there is no connection to turn over the starter. After switching off and on, it will all of a sudden make a connection and start. Does an ignition switch act like this when it is wearing out? My wife's key will not even start the car. Can anything be done to fix this or does it have to be replaced? I hate to do that since everything else works fine with that key, including the locking gas cap.
Any advice or suggestions? Thanks.

I am pretty sure it is the ignition switch. My '81 acted like that when it was going out. So I went to Autozone..and paid $10 for it. Of course it was a few years ago. And it was a pretty simple repair.
