What is the best way to clean my motor? I am hesitant about hosing it down because I know it will get in some electronics somewhere.

Vachum the areas were junk piles up, like the intake runners and under the battery tray. then what I did is wipe everything down with a mosit towel. If that isn't clean enough maybe you can get on of these?

Or you could power wash your compartment, thats what I did prior to painting my 240z. Just becareful where your aiming the stream. On a low setting it shouldn't remove any of the original paint. Never did on mine. I went with this method cause using engine degeaser is a pain in the azz. My engine bloack was hella greasy, powerwashing took it right off and left no residue. So Far the paint is holding great and looks sharp. here are some pics of mine.

It's fine to hose it off. But there are some things to be aware of.

DO NOT spray cold water on a hot engine. If it's hot, let it cool off till you can touch it w/ your hand. A warm engine is good tho, as the grease/dirt will come off easier.

You can spray everywhere in the engine bay, but before starting engine after the wash, take off the distrib cap & blow the inside dry w/ an air gun or let it air dry. Do the same for the AFM, TPS, & head temp connections.

I use PURPLE POWER degreaser from AutoZone/Checker to clean my engines. Spray the engine bay down, then spray in the PP... let it sit or use a brush/rag/gasket scraper to remove dirt... spray off. Quite simple.

I DID THAT TO MY OLDER ASPEN WHEN I HAD IT. GOOP WORKS BETTER THAN PP THOUGH. Just make sure you dry out everything.

i used goo gone and some steel wool. precise and i could get in tough spaces. hurt hands though.

i hate holding and using the crap to. but it does wonders in certain areas. i used it on the actual compartment walls in the engine bay as well. cleaned it up really nice, gotta be careful though you can actually take off the paint my way. but it works good and is precise.

There is one really REALLY good use for steel wool, if you have any chromed metal parts that have some minor surface rust on them then some #0000 steel wool and glass cleaner is about the best thing you can clean it with. I was stand offish about it until my friend showed me the results on his chrome rims that had surface rust on them....they looked like fu#*in mirrors when he was done. You have to make sure it is #0000 steel wool though as it is super fine and will not scratch the chrome. I would finish the cleaning with some Blue Magic metal polish to add a protective coating when done....Now go get your fu#*in shine box!!!<----Goodfellas

I've found that covering the distributor with plastic before hosing the engine bay works best. Be careful with the steel wool, because if you use it on the areas that are coated, you'll end up with rust.

An air gun works great to blow out loose dirt from the engine bay. Wal-Mart bags are your friend when it comes to washing the engine bay. Put a bag over the battery, dizzy, afm and iggy coil. Just as other people have already stated, purple power works great but, you may want to dilute it by half before hand because it will dry rubber out with a quickness and it will take all wax and polish off your paint. A toothbrush or other small brushes work great for small areas. I swear by steel wool, it works wonders on almost any surface but, like someone else has already said, it will take off paint if you work it too much but, for inner wheel wells, plastic and metal parts, it works wonders but sometimes the best thing to do is paint various brackets and whatnot, there's no cure for age other than to cover it up.
