The Bitter End

I got the final bad news today... my Z has a rod knock. After I got the new head on, the head was clacking really bad (or so I thought). After adjusting the rocker clearances 3 times and no change, I began to think it was a rod knock even though it sounded like it was coming from the head.

I took it to a Euro / Classic Japanese car shop today & got the confirmation that it indeed has a rod knock.

So my options are:
#1... pull the motor I just put back together, and rebuild it (time and money I don't want to spend on it).
#2... sell it (and not come close to breaking even).

I'm really sick of this car. I've spent about $15K on it. If I could sell it for $5K-$6k... I'd do it.

I have a video of it... I'll post in a few.

that sucks.... honestly, i say pull it, sell the chassis build it nice and stick it in the S30 you got, then sell the other turbo block you have, then at least your money isnt going to waste. or swap in the other turbo motor and sell it. but you got some good work in that zx motor to sell it as a bad motor car.

Dude that sucks man. I know how much you love that car. And what you have put into it. And that it has a lot of sentimental value to it. Really a tough situation right now..I am sure it is for you. I would think it through right now. Before you make a hasty decision..you might regret. Just give it some thought bro'. And I hope you make the right decision...keep us posted man..

yes yes... I got that part.

So... hours have past, I'm thinking it's now or never to do the rebuild. I'm done w/ college classes for the summer, I get off work @ 3:30pm everyday. I could theoretically do this job in a week or two... FUUUHHH!!!

On the bright side... those 6 quarts of fresh 10w-30 oil can now go in my Geos.

I'd agree with everyone else. I understand how much it sucks, but like you said there's going to be a big loss. I'd either say rebuild the engine, or swap another turbo engine in. Even though it may not be as good as the current. I certainly wouldn't want to ditch the body after all the work you've done.

I hate hearing that man. I am glad the head I sold you was solid though. If you want, I have the block that head came off of. It was a running engine. You`d have to come get it though.

he probably only needs the crank and a rod.

also, pulling these motors and rebuilding them is wicked easy. get the crank reground all new bearings upgrade whatever you want to while you in there maybe replace the rods specially if the one is ****ed and put back together, if you got all the parts engine pull one day disassemble and reassemble is both on day jobs other than the machine work on the crank then install in another. and its not to expensive of a job either. thats why you gotta love these engines. quit whining and do it if you got the time

if you do it the cheater way, the engine doesnt even have to come all the way out, you just gotta roll in the new ones. dont even take off your head or front cover.

soooo... want to re-read that statement and tell me all the flaws in it?

no?

ok well first off, WTF is a speed barrier? and how would gas be free then? that in no way relates to back to the future, and u spelled future furure which sound more like a typo of someone saying ruler in German than an English word. lol.

Dude man that sucks about the motor. You and me both can't win for lose lately with the L motor haha. At least you have a Geo as DD. Sure as hell beats a 510. DD a 70's car gets old real fast.

Gas was fair at 1.00/gallon and 21+mpg

Nothing below 80mpg is even worth driving. I hate cars now.

People who can afford new Vettes don't even think about what fuel costs. It could get 8mpg for all they care.

My 350Z is averaging about 24mpg now and I can't afford to drive!

Pfft, 24 mpg? Dude didn't you know? If you got a Tornado and a super electro magnet fuel saver device you could be getting 40 mpg and have 400 hp!

Hehe yeah gas is pretty ridiculous. I avoid driving if I can. $4.74 really stings when you're still starting out in the work force and have to commute everyday. If only public transportation was more efficient here like in Chicago and New York.
