I'm sure there must be a writeup here giving very generalized guidelines on upgrading a turbocharged engine. If your car is in basically good shape it isn't the engine internals that will hold you back. It's the fuel. When you add more air you have to add more fuel to go along with it or you risk detonation. An ic isn't a bad idea either. And a better exhaust is a definite plus. Safe is a matter of opinion. To me 12 is the limit. Anything more is very risky and also out of the t3 efficiency range. That's just my opinion from personal experience. There are probably people here and there who have had bad experience at lower boost or good experience trying higher boost. It's best to take modification slow and well thought out.

MBC = not very reliable, and somewhat cumbersome, cheap (both in quality and price)
EBC = much more reliable, adjustable / tunable, greater cost, greater benefits.
I highly suggest investing in several Tuner / Turbocharger books before modifying your car. You need to know how these components work.

What is still not clear? 10psi max on a complete stock motor... 12psi w/ an appropriate size ic (there will still be a possibility of blowing stuff).
Anything above 12psi you'll need a wide-band a/f gauge, some larger injectors (310-370cc work by adjusting the AFM), and it would be wise to upgrade the turbo for 12psi+ boost as the stock T3 starts to lose efficiency.

you blew that headgasket cause it was a felpro piece of ***! they make every gasket good OTHER THAN headgaskets. at work i just sorted all our head gaskets, there were a few MLS headgaskets but none were actually manufactured by felpro themselves. if you want a headgasket, go to the dealer or go to an upgraded aftermarket, stay away from the rest in my opinion.

Been answered twice in this thread already. 10-12psi max running stock components. I blew a stock Felpro headgasket at ~12psi using an intercooler... so there ya have it.

I think a good ball and spring mbc is acceptable but definitely not the old bleeder style. I used a boostvalve.com mbc on my 85t for several years w/o a problem. If I still had the same setup as the 85t I'd be happy with an MBC. Funny you posted the Bell book. He doesn't care much for BOV's

I have a RFl blow off valve just like nismopick. I had a manual boost controller that nismopick gave me.. It spiked alot ! i thought for one second it was set at 10psi right... i have a external boost gauge when i took it out on the free way i thought 10 psi was good until i looked at the boost gauge 20 psi no joke ! after about 3 minuties there was alot of smoke out of my tail pipe " i blew the seals on the stock turbo " never the less i bought a Greddy pro 2 digital boost controller " i still havent installed it " im waiting to see if my friend will sell me his 1982 280zx 2 seater turbo for 2000 dollars
