A/C Retrofit Question

A/C Retrofit Question
Hello! Just bought a 1982 Datsun 280zx non turbo. Air conditioning needs recharged, it's sat for a while with no freon in it, and the compressor probably won't live out the year. But anyway, here's my question. I've tried retrofitting it for r134, however, I've been having problems. The couplings don't seem to work properly. The first ones I tried, the valves inside bent and it wouldn't accept freon. The seconds I tried fit, but the low side valve leaked because it kept the plunger depressed. I loosened it slightly and it stopped but obviously I don't want to keep it like that. So, my question is, what fittings should I buy to properly convert the compressor? Is there a special kit I can buy that is specifically for datsun z's? Because the generic ones don't seem to work very well. If not, what should I get?

Get a free factory service manual at XenonS130 - S130 Reference along with other hot docs. Your FSM is your friend, full of inspection and troubleshooting pages that really work. Try 'em.
Sounds like your A/C charge fittings have been deformed by previous attempts to recharge. Check your original fittings and judge if they are still in shape to accept a standard coupling without leaking. If not, they need to be replaced. Gotta get 'em back to some standard shape.
Otherwise, parts stores sell a set of basic conversion fittings to accommodate a basic refrigerant re-charge in 2014. They sell the charge hose with its own screw valve and a pressure gauge, plus a can or two of 134A - all you need to hook it up, tap the cans and fill your system. But you do need a tight fit at the charge valve - and a zero-leak closed system everywhere else.
Thanks and welcome!
