Ditching EGR on 82 ZX...will it hurt anything?

From what I've seen from Bleach and others, they've thrown out the EGR and still passed emissions. The only way it sounds like you might fail is if there's an under-hood check. I think it was snow who mentioned that the only disadvantage of not having the EGR was that you'd have to let your car to warm up, but after reading up on how the EGR system works. Vacuum isn't even allowed to the EGR until the car is at operating temp.

For the warm-up part, I meant I had asked if there were any disadvantages to eliminating EGR and snow said the only disadvantage was that you have to let the car warm up first. So I read up on it, and found there's pretty much no disadvantage other than emissions, although it sounds like for the stock Z there's really no advantage.

I bought a Motorsport Jet-Hot header off of ebay for a 79-80, called Motorsport to see if it would fit my 82...the EGR is different & won't connect to their kit, so I'm considering ditching it or swapping an EGR from a 79-80 model.

Just from what I was reading in the Haynes guide it tells about the EGR for 81-82 year models, I'm pretty sure it didn't change for 83, but anyway it says that there is a Thermal Vacuum Valve(TVV) placed in between the Throttle Body and the EGR valve, and it is supposed to be closed until the Engine Coolant hits 131*F or normal operating temp so the EGR won't function and lean out the rich mixture that a car normally has when it starts.
I would just say ditch the EGR or if you can, while you're pulling everything apart to install your header, see if you can grab an N-42 intake I believe it was. It had no EGR valve, gives your intake a bit of a cleaner look, and gives you just a bit more room, maybe not so neccesary for an N/A, but it's definitely more helpful on the Turbo models as there's more room to get to the Turbo.

i dont have an egr. and we have the exact smog testing as california. i just used a 3/8" npt plug for the bottom and get a bolt for the header hole. i even left my egr valve in place with no block off for inspection incase they look. it stays closed anyhoo.

Yeah, I have a '79 N/A and I disconnected my egr when I put in the MSA header. I had to cut the pipe that goes to the header and plug it up. As far as driving goes, it's great. We don't have emissions tests in Texas, so I'm cool. What else can we take off if we don't need to pass emissions?
