Is this a joke? I'm sorry if it's not. But why are you still using the ECU if you've got carbs? The ECU controls the fuel injectors. If you've got carbs then you dont need the ECU or any of it's sensors. The ignition on the 280zx operated independant of the ECU as well.

As far as your problem goes though, you'll have to be alittle more specific with what the problem is and exactly what you did.

Welcome to Zdriver!

Like J said you do not need the ECU for carbs. What controls the amount of fuel going into the engine are the needles in the carbs. If you look inside the carbs youll see that the needles are attched to a "Piston" like piece of metal. now when the car is on it creates a vacum thus lifting the piston and dictating the amount of fuel going into the engine. If you never worked on SU's before I recommend that you go to http://www.ztherapy.com. The guy there really knows his stuff when it comes to these carbs. Ask him about the "Just SU's" video.

I have a couple of questions for you, is your 280zx a turbo or N/A. I wondering about this cus you stated that you placed an E88 head on the engine. Just want to warn you that if your car is N/A your compression might be close to 9.80:1 (according to the L6 engine calulator and assuming the head has never been milled). At 9.80 your getting close to 10:1, which from I heard is when the car starts pinging...Although this varies with the temperature of the engine, the strength of the ignition system, type of octane gas, and etc.

Also did you modify the fuel system? cus for a carb set up you only need 5-7psi fuel pressure, while the fuel injected is like 40psi and up. You can ethier change the entire system to a carb set up or you MIGHT be able to place fuel pressure regulator. I not entirely sure on fuel system asspect of the conversion but search the site and other Z websites to VERIFY.

Hope this helps ya out...

Later,

Allen

first off i understand that i dont need the ecu, but what do i need to power the coil, starter and the rest of my ignition system. when i first blow the first engine all i did was throw a rod. so i had a 77 parts car with a brand new engine from nissan and it had n42 head with flat top pistons 0.10 over and the e-88 head that put on has been milled ported and has a upgraded street cam. 3 to 2 header 2.5 inch strait pipe, holley fuil pump and regulater.

after putting in all of my parts i go to turn over the in engine to check oil pressure and nothing happens the only thing that work is my door alarm.
i also replaced all of by batter cables and starter.

The coil is powered off the ignition switch. As is the starter. The ignition system is self contained other then requiring an outside voltage source. It's internal reluctor/stator magnet setup provides it with the proper timing. If you dont have a manual with a wiring diagram then you need to get one. The starter gets power straight from the battery. The starter solenoid is powered by the ignition switch. There should be a yellow wire going to the starter solenoid. All the wiring for these things should already be in the car. Get a manual with a wiring diagram and you can sort through what you do and do not need. Almost all of the wiring on the engine gets tossed with the exception of the ignition system. And is the holley pump designed for carb or EFI?

Are you driving a 280ZX or a 280Z?

my car is an 81 280zx 2+2 with t-tops. the fuel pump is for carbs. it is the red line holley fuel pump it will free frow something like 64gph @ 7psi and that is why i got the adjustable fuel pressure regulator to bring it down to 2-3 psi

Keep your SU intake manifold and go to RaceTep and pick up a set of ITB's that will bolt right on to your SU intake.

http://www.racetep.com/twm.html

You'll also want to pick up a MegaSquirt setup while you're at it!

Have fun!
