electrical issues

hey guys, im new to this, just bought my 1982 280zx about a month ago and its great. i do have some questions though that hopefully someone can help with. every now and then if im in a hurry to get somewhere and bein heavy footed, it seems like the alternator dies when the engine reaches about 4500 rpm. all the lights come on, the headlights dim but the motor is still going strong. any ideas on what might be causing this issue? thanks!

Welcome to ZDriver!

If you suspect the alternator, you could take it (your car) to your local parts store (AutoZone, Napa, Checker, Kragen) and they can do a load check on your alternator / battery.

also could be loose belts, do they ever squeal? it willl sound like your doing a burn out but your not (and its very imbarrasing) not that it has happened to me, more than twice...

or i could just be a crappy old alt.

and welcome to ZDriver!!!!

check the fusebale link box next to the battery and make sure all the connections are good. I just had to replace all my wires yesterday. Luckily i go to school at universal technical institute so i have any tool and wires and connectors at my fingertips. i also have a dyno and i have 3 instructors that 1 helped design the vortec heads chevy use's, one used to work on formula 1 and indy cars and the other just is a ford master tech,gm master tech, toyota master tech and he knows just about enough info to fill prob...3 or 4 of my life times worth lol

Awesome and thanks for the warm welcome. I know it isnt the belts, ive checked them and no squealing, though i need to replace them sometime soon i imagine. The car had been sitting for about 4 months prior to me buying it, but started like a champ on the first try. I probably will have to take the alternator and voltage regulator to get checkeed i imagine. By chance is there anyone here from new mexico? i need to know if theres a local place in albuquerque to get a new fender and headlight well and hood for fairly cheap, since when i bought it was entirely wrecked.

i found that the alt belt needs to be really tight to actually do a good job with these cars, if its the standard tightness its still slipping a little and doesnt fully charge. if the belt is tight i definatly would suspect the alternator its self. due it being engine speed related, the brushes or field could be the problem.
