I'm sorry, I've got to disagree with this one. Due to the tranny and diff gearing, autos are at a significant disadvantage. With 2 fewer gears, the ability to keep the engine at appropriate power levels for the situation is greatly hampered.

The inability to manage what gear is currently being used is also a disadvantage although you can mitigate this somewhat by forcing the use of 2nd gear, you still only have two gears that you can control (1st & 2nd) since 3rd is directly controlled by the hydraulics and valving in the tranny itself even if you shift into (D)rive, the tranny may decide to keep it in 2nd.

The auto is most advantageous in bracket drag racing where consistency at the threshold of your break-out time is most important.

In this type of racing, it's consistency that rules the day. Virtually any other motorsport will favor the manual including drifting where you typically keep the car in the gear most appropriate for the speed since you control the slide with modulation of the throttle, there's not a lot of shifting that occurs and if you have to shift, it's because you've already done something wrong.

Remember, drifting is about keeping the car in a constant slide, not just in the corners. You're actually turning the straightaways into an S curve to maintain the slide.

Update

Okay, here is an update:

The 10th i was gonna buy. The guy was a HUGE flake!!! so that didn't work out.

Then, i saw this '83 at the ford dealer on autotrader.com. Everything i was looking for too. Auto, 115k T tops. good paint. but when i got there it was a stick (which i don't mind just not what i am looking for) and the alt. was TOAST. We jumped it off just thinking it was the batt. then we went to pull out of the lot it just died . . . and no i didn't stall.

so anyways . . . I am checking on ebay found two that look like it could work out so wish me luck!!

you should have went into the dealership raising hell, and demanded that if they want to sell that POS, you would give em 500 bucks! What's the worst that could happen?? Sounds like a sweet 280, man.
